The Dungeon of Black Company
The Dungeon of Black Company came out in the summer of 2021 with a total of 12 episodes. It was definitely one of those isekai anime that broke the “Isekai” stereotype by doing something out of the ordinary. You must have heard of its manga that came out a few years ago, and I’m not going to lie, it was very average. However, did the anime deviate from the manga and serve us with something worth praising? Let’s find out more about it below in our in-depth review of the anime!
The Dungeon of Black Company tells us the story of Kinji Ninomiya, whose only goal was to become filthy rich, and for that, he worked day and night tirelessly without any breaks. Just when he could sustain his carefree, sluggish, easy, and luxurious life and become a NEET, he was transported to another world when a strange portal opened underneath him.
Now, Kinji is forced to do something he despises the most in the new world: work 24/7 like a dog. He works in a mining company for someone whose sole concern is profit and doesn’t care about the employees. Kinji can’t take it anymore and starts thinking of ways to get extremely rich exceptionally quickly.
He forms connections and even starts exploiting people to get what he wants. On his way, he meets many people and makes them the allies that will help him get to the top. However, his journey is not easy at all. Will he be able to rule the corporate world just like he used to do in his own world?
On the surface, The Dungeon of Black Company’s plot is just for pure entertainment, and while there’s nothing to learn, no inspiration, no lofty speeches, nothing of that sort; there are the underlying themes of choosing your path, sticking to your goals, and the “art of the deal!” That’s what makes this anime series very interesting and fun to watch. You will find yourself laughing throughout this anime.
There were many moments in this anime where you couldn’t tell what would happen next. Anime like this tends to give away what’s going to happen next. But we didn’t really see it in The Dungeon of Black Company. Many times, the funny moments in this anime are replaced by wholesome ones. There is never a dull moment with this anime, no matter what. It keeps you fresh and entertained all the time.
We loved how it highlights corporate slavery and mocks it in the funniest way ever. Sarcasm is the best way to deal with such themes. So, the story of The Dungeon of Black Company has no weak points. It's perfect and deserves full points!
The world Kinji is transported to is full of humans, demi-humans, monsters, and elves, so it’s no surprise this anime would introduce us to a bunch of eccentric misfits, Kinji Ninomiya being the biggest misfit of them all. His character is very well made.
Even though he’s weird, you will find yourself liking his personality for sure. He’s charismatic, cunning, loud, confident, and very careless. Due to his smartness, Kinji could solve many of his problems in the new world. His charisma made him rise from rock bottom to the top.
As Kinji builds his team, he is joined by Wanibe, a Lizardman who looks very intimidating. However, in reality, he can’t even hurt a bug. He’s a coward and is easily manipulated. Kinji used him initially but later took pity on him and made him a team member.
Wanibe is also very loveable. While he maintains his shy persona throughout the anime, Wanibe receives a lot of character development, becoming bolder as the show progresses.
We’re also introduced to a small majin named Rimu, who is highly overpowered and can transform as well. She cares about food all the time and nothing else. But she’s always there whenever Kinji needs him.
I guess we also have a trap wizard here for the fanservice. However, as Yusuke once said, “it seems our mister is a Ms,” Ranga’s fanservice is overshadowed by her kindness despite a tragic past.
If we’re being honest, the fanservice award goes to Shi, our resident female hero and badass who, unfortunately, is very loyal to an evil company. However, she soon joins Kinji and becomes a part of his team.
The characters of The Dungeon of Black Company are so diverse and versatile. We can’t help loving all of them. The creators have done a great job creating the characters and giving them goofy personalities.
The colors used for this anime are phenomenal. Though the animation seems average, there are some moments when it tends to stand out, and that’s because of the colors and sparkle. Character designs are awe-inspiring. Kinji’s character stands out the most.
The features of characters in this anime are also quite different. We haven’t seen such characters in any other anime. Overall, the animation seems pretty decent, and the character designs are unique.
The best thing about The Dungeon of Black Company is the voice actors who voiced all the characters. The voice actor of Kinji Ninomiya takes the cake because of his phenomenal voice acting. He put his soul into his work, and his voice fits a character like Kinji Ninomiya. All other characters also sounded excellent and appropriate to their personalities.
We don’t have much to talk about in the music and sound department as everything is perfect! When it comes to this anime’s opening and ending soundtrack, they’re pretty decent. They’re not very catchy, but they do sound fun.
Being one of the funniest and the most diverse isekai anime, The Dungeon of Black Company received a lot of attention when it came out. So, we’d recommend you to watch this anime! It offers us a fresh new concept that we haven’t seen in any other anime previously.
