The story introduced us to “Otherworld,” which is a realm that no one has much information about. Many mysterious and deadly creatures live in that realm that could threaten humans. The only way to that realm is a bunch of portals that one can find here and there in the most random places.

Sora Kamihiko is our main protagonist who came across a creature from the Otherworld one day. Our other protagonist named Toriko Nishina, goes to the Otherworld to search for her friend, Satsuki. According to Toriko, Satsuki went inside a portal and never returned; she believes her friend is somewhere in the Otherworld.

Both Sora and Toriko get involved with each other in the Otherworld. They become good friends. The two of them wish to know about this strange world and keep traveling in and out of that world. Both of them are ready to face the unknown challenges that are waiting for them in the Otherworld.

Otherside Picnic involves the genre of Shoujo Ai, aka Girls Love. This genre is controversial, and many people don’t like it. However, a good chunk of people love this genre. Naturally, as a Girls Love anime, it should’ve involved a lot of Yuri. But there were not many scenes devoted to Girls Love. Very mild use of the Girls Love element is there, which might disappoint the fans.

The anime is episodic. Each episode involves a new Urban Legend to be explored. Both our girls are responsible for exploring them. They follow a similar formula, and sometimes the story feels a bit repetitive.

Talking about the positive points, the “Otherworld” does give us creeps. Its concept is very bizarre. The creatures present there are very disturbing. That makes the series very intriguing and exciting. There’s constant tension and a sense of danger whenever our girls are in the world. We’re at the edge of our seats, wondering what will happen next in each episode. So, it’s not that bad. The plot is pretty interesting, and each episode is filled with thrills that keep us entertained throughout the series.

Both the characters of Sora and Toriko are very well written. You might feel that the characters are a bit generic. Because one of them is super shy/introverted and the other is popular and a true beauty. That’s how usually the characters are in the world of Shoujo Ai. However, the setting in this Shoujo Ai is a bit different. The conditions are different.

The situations are different. And because of that, both the characters seem very interesting. Their personalities complement each other perfectly, bringing out the best in each other. They are adorable, and we can’t help falling in love with them. We respect the creators for creating realistic and interesting characters for this anime.

The art for Otherside Picnic is stunning. There is a stark difference between the two worlds present in the anime, and both of them look amazing. The real world is quite colorful and looks very pretty. The Otherworld, on the other hand, appears to be very dark. The transition is very impressive.

The movements are also very fluid. The ghosts shown in this anime are very detailed, and their movements are also very smooth. Both our main characters look charming. Their designs are immaculate and pleasing to the eyes. Their movements are also very different from other people’s movements in the anime. Their costumes, hair, and features are gorgeous. Overall, the animation is perfect. There are no flaws, and we love this kind of animation with all our hearts.

The opening of Otherside Picnic is full of energy and is a very pleasant listen. It tells us the importance of friendship, and we love the lyrics. All the other songs of this anime are pretty meaningful, and you’d want to listen to them again and again. As far as the background music and voice acting are concerned, they’re flawless.

A lot of care is put in the background sound as you could hear even the ghosts in the background. Everything is heavily detailed. Both the girls sound excellent. Their voices suit their character well. We must give it to the voice actresses for outstanding performance! The music department also did well, and every song was superb.

Those expecting some intense Yuri scenes are bound to be disappointed because it’s more than that. However, the plot and the story will reel you right in, and you’re going to forget about the Yuri aspect. You will keep wondering what happens next in the anime. Every time something unexpected happens, that will make your experience even more fun. So, we’d recommend you watch this anime as it won’t disappoint you!
