Sub Vs Dub - Pinned Up Ink

HOW SHOULD ANIME BE WATCHED?

Anime is created only in Japan; however, millions of fans all over the world love anime. Of course, most of these fans are not able to speak or understand Japanese. That is why subs and dubs are a huge part of the world of anime. If you are an anime fan, then you probably enjoy your anime with English subtitles or dubbing.

Most anime fans dislike English dubbed anime as they believe that the Japanese voiceovers are way better. But at the same time, there are also many fans who prefer to watch anime with English dubbing as it is easier to watch and understand. If you are new to the world of anime, then this whole debate is going to leave you totally confused!

Should you watch your favorite anime series dubbed or subbed?
Long answer short, it depends on your own personal taste/preference.

Today, I am going to tell you guys about all the different aspects of subbed and dubbed anime that greatly affect your overall experience. Hopefully, I’ll be able to help you decide if you should watch your next favorite series with English subtitles or dubbing.

Subbed Anime:

I know it sounds a bit odd, but subbed anime are not as old as dubbed anime. At first, fans all over the world liked to watch their anime with English dubbing. However, people slowly started to realize that the quality of the English dubs was extremely bad at that time, and many shows lost their original appeal because of these bad dubs. Many anime fans still believe that subbed anime are superior as compared to dubbed anime. Let us take a closer

look at some of the aspects of subbed anime that separate them from dubbed anime.

Japanese voiceover is better in some cases!

While this was the case with every anime back in the 1970s and 1980s, today, the English voice actors are just as talented as the Japanese voice actors, and they try to portray each character in the best way possible. However, at the end of the day, a dubbed version is still a dubbed version. This means that the original creator’s intentions with the show are not fully portrayed in the dubbed version. Because of this reason, the Japanese voiceover is better in some cases. Moreover, every language is built in its own unique way, so it is sometimes completely impossible to portray the creator’s original intentions.

Subbed anime can be hard to watch!

This is the one major drawback of watching subbed anime! You always have to keep your eyes peeled at the bottom of your screen. This means that you are not able to fully enjoy all of the action that is going on in the show. Trying to constantly read all the subtitles also demands a lot of attention, which means that it is quite hard for you to multitask as you are watching your favorite anime series.

Some amazing anime that you should watch with English subtitles:

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure:

While the English dubbed version of this anime is pretty decent, it does not really manage to capture the true intentions of the creator. JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is an anime that should only be enjoyed with English subtitles for peak entertainment.

Your Lie in April:

Again, the dubbed version of this show is pretty decent; however, it just can’t compete with the beauty of the original. Being a slow-paced show, it is also easier to read the subtitles and focus on the show itself when you are watching Your Lie in April.

Dubbed Anime:

Anime first started to get dubbed into English all the way back in the 1960s, and the quality of these dubs used to be immensely bad. Over the years, the English voice actors have learnt from their mistakes, and today, the English voice acting is just as good as the Japanese voice acting. Let us take a closer look at some of the aspects of dubbed anime that separate them from subbed anime.

You are able to easily understand and enjoy the show!

This is the biggest plus point of watching dubbed anime! You can easily understand the show itself and enjoy it. You don’t have to miss out on all of the beautifully animated scenes as your eyes are not stuck at the bottom of the screen. Watching anime with English dubbing does mean that you are missing out on some originality; however, the voice actors work extremely hard in order to mimic the original version as closely as possible. Multitasking is also pretty easy with dubbed anime, so you can easily enjoy your favorite food and anime at the same time.

The voices are sometimes portrayed better!

Subbed anime can sound pretty strange to someone who is new to the world of anime. If you are not used to the Japanese voices, then the dubbed version can be a better choice for you as the voices seem more natural.

Some amazing anime that you should watch with English dubbing:

Attack on Titan:

Many anime fans love to watch Attack on Titan in Japanese with English subtitles. However, Attack on Titan is a pretty fast-paced show, so it can be extremely hard for you to keep up

with the subtitles. Also, you miss out on a lot of beautifully created action scenes just because your eyes are peeled at the bottom of your screen.

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Z is another action-shounen anime that is packed to the brim with amazing fighting sequences. You miss out on a lot of the fighting scenes if you decide to go with the English subbed version. Also, in my personal opinion, the sound of Goku is pretty annoying in the dubbed version!

Conclusion:

Like I said at the beginning of this article, it just depends upon your personal taste! You can watch almost any anime in dub as the quality of the dubbing is quite high in the modern age, or you can stick to the subbed version if you are a fan of originality.
