Maria The Virgin Witch- The title is definitely misleading, and many people might think it involves sexual themes. However, this is not the case with Maria The Virgin Witch. Though such themes are pretty relevant, it's not the only thing that defines this anime series.  It’s simply a story that involves the basic concept of right vs. wrong. But there is more to the story than it seems on the surface.

Maria, The Virgin Witch, takes us near the end of the Hundred Years War between England and France. Maria is a powerful witch who is trying to stop the raging battle between the two countries. For that purpose, she uses her magic to prevent the conflict that could prove lethal to both sides. Her acts of using magic are noticed by an archangel Michael who intervenes and tells her not to meddle in the affairs of humans. Maria is warned that her magic will be taken if she loses her virginity and is completely forbidden to use magic to end the conflict.

However, Maria does not pay attention to any of the warnings given by Michael and continues to do her job. She’s branded as a heretic. The Church starts a conspiracy against Maria and how to take away her Magic in order to put an end to her goal. Will Maria be able to win against the Church and the Divine powers?

Many themes are explored in this anime series, like war, gender politics, social values, theology, and much more. All these themes are pretty heavy and not very easily understandable. However, Maria The Virgin Witch has made it very easy to understand by everyone.

The start of this anime series is pretty strong. We see Maria breaking all the stereotypes of women being chaste and naive; at least, that’s what happens initially in the series.

The series does indulge in a lot of fanservice. However, it does it solemnly. The fanservice is in the form of dialogues, actions, and characters. Maria becomes a target of teasing as she is embarrassed at the thought of being deflowered. Now, Joseph is the man with whom we can ship Maria. However, it’s interesting to see how Maria resists the urge of losing her virginity with Joseph knowing well the consequence of her actions.

The war shown in this series is quite realistic. We’re shown the crude weapons that were used back then in battle. This gives a nostalgic vibe. The amount of supernatural tropes is also definitely there. The concept of witches, magic, divine powers, angels, everything comes under the umbrella of supernatural themes. All of them are portrayed really well without any flaws.

So, the plot is simply amazing. It’s not that simple, but the way everything is portrayed makes it very simple to understand. We commend the creators for actually putting some effort into the plot/story.

Every character in Maria The Virgin Witch serves some purpose. They all have their opinions about humanity, the good and the bad in it, and the meaning of life. The interaction between the characters is also very vital. It adds up to the context of the setting. The characters are given a decent amount of character development, which is the best thing about the characters.

We loved how Ezekiel refused the orders of the Heavens. It felt completely natural. It’s not only the main characters that go through the development. The side characters also get a good amount of character development as well as good screen time. Each character matters to this anime series because of the fantastic character writing. After watching this anime, we get to know how character writing is done correctly.

Maria, the Virgin Witch, has solid visuals. The animation is easy on the eyes, and we can follow each movement without hurting our eyes. The character design is absolutely gorgeous, and all the characters look really attractive. The artistic quality is consistent, which is something we need to appreciate. The colors perfectly match the themes of war which is the most prominent theme in Maria The Virgin Witch. Another highlight of the animation of these series is the clothing design. They look beautiful and very suitable for the characters.

Overall, we don’t have anything to complain about the animation of this series. It’s literally perfect!

The music department is lacking a bit. The opening soundtrack doesn’t go well with the historical theme. It’s also not that memorable either. But still, it's pretty enjoyable to listen to as the anime begins. The voice acting was pretty in sync and suited the characters well. The background music is also really pumping and suitable. So, it’s all good in the music department!
