Sunday Without God Sunday Without God, from its title, feels really compelling and exciting. It incorporates the concept of “the end of the world” in a very creative manner. We know that this concept is not entirely unique. We’ve seen a lot of series revolving around the world-ending concept. However, the way Sunday Without God approaches it is pretty different. So, if you’re interested in Sunday Without God, read our in-depth review of the series down below! “Be careful what you wish for” is something we will be dealing with a lot in this anime. What happens when God himself abandons the world? Life cannot continue normally. No one can be born nor die in such circumstances. The “dead” come back to life but are more like zombies, walking among the living. Before abandoning the world, God gave his last gift of “Gravekeepers” to the people of the world. The Gravekeepers are able to carry out the proper burial of the dead and put them to rest forever. We are introduced to Ai, a Gravekeeper in her village and an amiable and cheerful girl. Her late mother also used to be a Gravekeeper. One day, a mysterious man named Hampnie Hambart, who is apparently Ai’s father, kills all the people of her village. Having lost everything, Ai decides to accompany the man. During her journey with her father, Ai sticks to her duty of putting the dead to rest and learning about the tragedies going on in the world God left behind. Let us get this clear: Sunday Without God is adapted from a light novel. The stories are very self-contained and are constantly revolving around the main character, Ai. Because of the little stories, the anime follows an arc structure, and there are different arcs centered around Ai and her interaction with different people throughout her journey. This proves that all the characters and the setting won’t appear in other arcs. Because of the various arcs and settings, Sunday Without God gives us a lot of different themes to explore, which is not bad at all. The arcs are pretty different from each other. There are a total of four arcs. The first two follow the central theme of the anime. The last two arcs are pretty small and are entirely different from the first two arcs. The content in all these arcs is unique and unpredictable. It’s not boring at all, so we have to give it to the creators! We’re bombarded with a lot of emotional scenes that are highly impactful. We’re not comparing them with any other highly dynamic anime. The scenes are unique and impactful in their own way. There are a few scenes where the viewers might get turned off as Ai’s little loli acts accompany them. They kind of ruin the emotional impact sometimes. However, we’re again given something emotional right after, so it’s not that bad! Overall, the plot and the story of Sunday Without God is beautifully crafted. It rightly incorporates the elements of mystery, emotions, and happiness, and they perfectly balance each other out. Sunday Without God features a lot of characters, but they disappear after their respective arcs. There are only a few characters that can be seen constantly throughout the series. Ai is the central part of the series, and everything revolves around her. She is also one of the driving forces in the anime, and her development is very impressive. In terms of likeability, Ai’s character falters a little. We like her because she’s cute and sweet and that’s about it. She sometimes shows her loli nature which gets really annoying. Other than that, her beliefs and flawless views make her feel like the reincarnation of God himself. Scar and Yuri are two more characters that we see pretty often throughout the series. Both of them serve as the “mother” and “father” of the group, respectively. They appear to be essential characters at first with their different background stories, but they soon turn unimportant and irrelevant. That’s where we were a bit disappointed because Ai is the only one who gets the most importance and screen time all the time. We cannot stress enough how beautiful and soft the colors look in the art of this anime. They are very light with each other and look absolutely stunning. The characters look gorgeous, and that’s where Sunday Without God takes the cake. The background looks phenomenal with little details. The evening sky looks beautiful, and we are hooked to the series right off the bat because of its fine animation. We definitely give 10/10 to the animation department of this series! The background music of the series blends in well with the scenes. It dramatically affects our emotions and lets us experience the moment beautifully. The opening and ending soundtracks are also good enough to hook us right in. We also need to talk about the voice actors who did a phenomenal job in portraying the characters. The best voice acting award definitely goes to Daisuke Namikawa, who voiced Hampnie Hambart. His voice is magical and suits the character really well. So, here we are with our in-depth review of the series Sunday Without God. It’ll definitely appeal to you if you’re looking for something short yet interesting to watch.
