Maid Sama!
Maid Sama was one of the highly anticipated anime when the news of it coming out started surfacing. It was apparent because of the massive popularity of its manga. Fans were just going haywire and were excited about its anime adaptation. As soon as Maid Sama’s anime got released, it gained insane popularity and became one of the best romance anime ever.
Today, we’ll be doing an in-depth review of Maid Sama and will see why it’s loved so much by people all around the world. So without further ado, let’s get right into the review!
Misaki Ayuzawa just got transferred from an all-girls school to a co-ed one. She became a stringent Student Council President that the boys referred to as “Demon President” because of her extremely strict behavior against boys who caused trouble. Misaki always took the side of the girls and reprimanded the boys.
As perfect as Misaki looks, she has an embarrassing little secret that nobody knows. She works at a maid cafe to help her family out as they are not very well off. She has successfully kept her job a secret from her peers and kept her perfect image intact. However, one day, Takumi Usui, the most popular boy at her school, finds out about her little secret. Now, Takumi will blackmail Misaki and tell her to do weird chores to buy his silence. While doing so, Takumi falls in love with her and pledges that he will protect her reputation.
The story of Maid Sama is pretty light and straightforward. You don’t have to use your brain while watching it. There are no complex situations and scenarios that you might find intriguing. However, its story is something that will make you fall in love with it. A lot of people might find the story very typical, and yes, it is typical. But sometimes, familiar is beautiful, and there’s no reason for us to hate it.
The most important thing that we really loved about this anime is that the maid theme is not overused. We do not see everything revolving around it. Many other elements make up the plot. We’re happy that the series did not ruin itself by overusing the theme of maids.
In terms of comedy, it’s full of comedic moments. However, it was hard for us to laugh at some of the funny moments, and they appeared to be forced. Other than that, the comedic elements used were okay. They were just not over the top. Still, it was pretty enjoyable for us.
Having such a straightforward plot, Maid Sama has proved to be quite a refreshing watch. We loved the concept as there was not much going on but a very light and adorable romance between two high school students. We appreciate the creators for creating such a new little story that does not involve any complexities.
We have a very likable female lead who appears to be a feminist with her perfect image. We often see useless female leads in this genre, but Misaki is an exception, and her character is very well-written. Her hard work gave her the position of being the Student Council, not just her popularity or beauty. This makes her character very likable.
Our male lead, Takumi Usui, is the kind of guy that every girl dreams of being with. He has everything; money, power, good grades. His character development was nearly zero in the anime, and that’s what disappointed us. We can’t really see any flaws in his personality, and that seems very strange. We also don’t know much about his background; his character seems a little out of place. There were about 26 episodes to develop his character, but it remained the same from the first episode to the last.
We have a bunch of exciting side characters that are also very likable. Each of them got their own episode to flesh out their personality. That makes us wonder even more why Takumi Usui got left out? Had his personality been developed rightly, the character department would’ve been perfect!
This anime introduces the concept of chibi art adorably. Many people do not like watching chibi anime, but we enjoyed some chibi moments that Maid Sama threw here and there. We really did not mind that.
The animation is pretty simple and easy on the eyes. The colors are not too bright and not too soft either. They’re just perfect to please and comfort the eyes. The art style was also sometimes very cheesy, like the flowery backgrounds. The way the animators animated Takumi Usui’s appearance in every episode made us cringe so hard; we know he’s attractive, you don’t have to remind us in every episode!
We have to admit that the opening and ending were extremely annoying after hearing it the third time. We really couldn’t help but skip it to watch the actual happenings in the anime. The creators have just stuffed Takumi Usui everywhere, and in the opening, he’s still showing off his attractiveness. It’s nowhere near cute or pleasing! So, the sound department disappointed us with the loud and irritating opening and ending theme song.
If you’ve never watched Maid Sama and are looking for something light and refreshing to watch, then this is it! While being one of the most popular romance anime, Maid Sama does have its fair share of flaws. However, we still can’t deny the fact that it’s pretty enjoyable.
