With some of the best animation in the world of anime, a fantastic story, and an incredible cast of memorable characters, Made in Abyss is a pretty decent show. However, it is not everyone’s cup of tea because of a few reasons. The first season of this anime aired in 2017, and a sequel in the form of a movie was released just last year.

Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at all the different elements of this anime that make it a popular series that thousands of fans love.

The story of Made in Abyss takes place in an alternate universe. In this world, a vast hole leads you to an exciting world with relics of the past where mysterious creatures exist on Earth’s surface. This hole known as the Abyss is filled to the brim with mysteries just waiting to get discovered, and the question on everyone’s mind is, “what lies at the bottom?” Brave individuals called “divers” are ready to risk their lives as they go inside the Abyss and uncover its secrets.

Our main character in this anime is a girl named Riko. Riko is the daughter of a legendary diver known as Lyza the Annihilator. Sadly, Riko’s mother got lost in the Abyss at the time of her birth, but this fact is not enough to stop Riko from wanting to reach the deepest depths of this Abyss. One day, while wandering around on the Abyss’ upper-most layer, Riko finds a strange robot that looks like a young boy.

She names him Reg and decides to go deeper into the Abyss. Through his help, the two set off on a long and dangerous journey as they try to recover Reg’s lost memories and the secrets of the Abyss itself.

This anime’s plot seems quite exciting and unique, and the story progression is also quite decent. This anime might look like something childish and wholesome, but as you keep on watching, you will quickly realize just how mature and saddening the tale of these two kids will be.

Realistic Characters

If you haven’t watched the anime yourself, you might find it quite absurd when someone calls the characters in this anime realistic and interesting. I mean, they are just a bunch of little kids. Well, yes, the two main characters are just little kids, and of course, they act pretty childishly. However, seeing their personalities grow as they embark on this dangerous journey is a truly breathtaking experience.

Let us take a closer look at the two main characters in the series:

Riko:

As mentioned before, Riko is the daughter of the legendary diver known as Lyza the Annihilator, and she plans on becoming an amazing diver just like her. Riko had spent all of her life in an orphanage as her mother went missing when she was only two years old. She is a brilliant yet stubborn young girl who gets fascinated by all the mysteries of the Abyss. While she might act quite naive at times, Riko can make quick decisions under pressure.

Her personality develops a lot as she discovers that the Abyss is far more dangerous than she had initially thought. Despite all the odds stacked up against her, Riko is determined to uncover all the Abyss’s secrets and find her lost mother.

Reg:

Reg is the mysterious robot that randomly got discovered by Riko. While he is just a robot, Reg looks and acts just like a real little boy. Unlike Riko, Reg is quite timid and gets scared quite easily. This boy has no memories of his past, so he decides to go to the Abyss’ bottom to learn more about himself.

Reg is a pretty strong fighter. This boy/robot has been equipped with a set of extendable arms that can easily latch onto anything. He can also shoot powerful lasers out of his hands; however, he gets pretty tired after only a single shot.

Looking at Made in Abyss’ art-style, you might quickly decide that this anime is meant for little kids. However, you should never judge a book by its cover! Despite the cute and wholesome art-style, Made in Abyss is a pretty mature and exciting anime. The world of Made in Abyss looks brilliant and mesmerizing.

The animation itself is flawless. Studio Kinema Citrus has handled this beautiful show’s animation, and the animators have paid actual attention to detail.

IS IT A MUST-WATCH ANIME?

As you might’ve already guessed if you have read this review so far, Made in Abyss is something marvelous. However, as I said at the start of this review, this anime is not everyone’s cup of tea.

The biggest reason why this anime might push some people away is the slow story progression. If you are not a big fan of quiet adventures, you might not get too invested in this series.

Made in Abyss might have a relatively slow story progression at first, but this anime quickly starts to get interesting if you decide to stick around. I wouldn’t call Made in Abyss a must-watch anime for all kinds of anime fans, but it is something that most anime enthusiasts can appreciate.

This anime takes its time to draw the viewers in, but you will be completely hooked once you have watched a few episodes. The anime offers some of the most beautiful animations in the world of anime and a cute and relatable cast of remarkable characters.

The first season has 13 episodes, so that anyone can watch it quite easily. Also, the second season has been confirmed, so you can rest assured that the story of Riko and Reg won’t go unfinished.
