“Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki,” also known as “Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun” (Jakusha Character Tomozaki-kun) or “The Low Tier Character Tomozaki-kun,” is a 12 episode TV Anime series that aired from the 8th of January until the 26th of March, in Winter 2021.
It featured the genres of Drama and Romance alongside the School theme and received a rating of PG-13 for teenagers 13 years or older. It was produced by Pony Canyon, APDREAM, Bit grooove promotion, and Dream Shift, licensed by Funimation and brought to life by Studio Project No.9. The main staff behind its creation are Yanagi Shinsuke as Director, Motoyama Satoshi as Sound Director, Fly on Original Character Design, and DIALOGUE+ on Theme Song Performance.
The Anime is adapted from the source Light novel of the same title, which began publication on the 18th of May 2016 and is still ongoing. This is the work of Author Yaku Yuuki and Artist Fly, which won the 10th Shogakukan Light Novel Grand Prize. Additionally, it landed at eighth place in the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! ranking under the Best Light Novel category in 2017. It has also been published in English by Yen Press since the 30th of July 2019.
Two Anime Special episodes titled “Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun Specials” (The Low Tier Character "Tomozaki-kun" OVA or Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki OVA) aired from the 7th of May until the 2nd of June 2021m which included the third and fourth volumes of the Blu-ray/DVD volumes. A new Anime project titled “Jaku-Chara Tomozaki-kun (Shinsaku Anime)” was also announced.
The story revolves around protagonist Fumiya Tomozaki, who just happens to be Japan's most outstanding player in an online game titled “Attack Families,” commonly termed "Tackfam”. But his in-game skills and revered title cannot help him in real life, where he severely falls short in his everyday high school life due to a lack of social skills and amiability.
He fails at having friends in the real world and decides to blame the convoluted mechanics and unfair rules of the complex game known as life itself. He is thus forced to give up and proclaim himself a bottom-tier character in this absurd "game." His life is about to undergo a drastic change following a fateful meeting with another top-tier Tackfam player, Aoi Hinami.
Fumiya is beyond surprised to discover that the player's real-world identity is that of a famous, intelligent, and sociable classmate of his, someone who is the complete opposite of himself. Aoi is similarly surprised by how inept Fumiya is at anything besides Tackfam and decides to help him succeed in what she considers the most fantastic game in existence.
The path ahead is not easy; it is full of gruesome ordeals involving social interactions and interpersonal relationships. Regardless, Fumiya begins his steady ascent into the higher tiers of the glorious and bittersweet game of life.
The beauty of the story lies in how it correlates and differentiates video games and real-life while improving viewers’ social skills and life profiles, transforming them from loner-lifestyles to more sociable ones. Life coaching is part of the plot, and it uses gaming to execute it.
It effectively uses gaming terminologies in its narration to reflect how people can improve their lives. Tomozaki is determined to beat this new game while balancing Trackfam, school life, social life, and personal life. Like most gamers, he wants to win, and to do so, he must undergo many trials and character development.
The plot, themes, and narrative follow the drama and romance genres while maintaining its gaming perspective. What makes it unique is how it delivers life advice under a gaming theme and presents the concept of shifting into a more healthy lifestyle. There are the good old school aspects, where the protagonist meets new people, builds relationships, and learns about the world and its many struggles.
These aspects help balance out the series and widen its horizons. On the other hand, the pacing is too fast and feels rushed when not involving Tomozaki’s development. The central focus is the main character’s growth, and viewers need to get used to it. This is a plus point for viewers who like clear-cut character development. Appealing.
There are also numerous cringe-worthy moments, but these exist with reason and more significant meaning, so some patient understanding is necessary to make the most of it. Overall, this is a great story to learn from, and It is perfect for complete introverts who want to break free or for people lacking in social skills.
The Characters highlight is Tomozaki himself, a man with his own philosophies who shows undeniable and believable growth throughout the series. He was open to change and evolved into a genuinely respectable person. Hinami is admirable, too, especially when it comes to social skills.
The leading duo’s dynamic is perfect for the series themes, and they complement each other on their progress. The remaining characters aren’t as noteworthy but act as good supports to the story and strengthen the leading duo’s presence. They all have some substance, ranging from energetic and lively, cute and silent, open-minded and opposite-gender counterparts.
The Art and Animation are both outstanding. This series may not be flashy or unique, but it has a decent amount of effort put into it. It follows a simple visual style, not taxing on the eyes, and it works fine. There is room for improvement, for it had the potential to be more alluring and fluid, but it did no wrong as it stood.
The Sounds and Music are decent too. The Opening theme is "Jinsei Easy?" by DIALOGUE+. The Ending themes are "Ayafuwa Asterisk for Hinami Aoi" by Hisako Kanemoto, "Ayafuwa Asterisk for Yuzu Izumi” by Nene Hieda, "Ayafuwa Asterisk for Nanami Minami” by Hasegawa Ikumi, "Ayafuwa Asterisk for Kikuchi Fuuka" by Ai Kayano, and "Ayafuwa Asterisk" by DIALOGUE+, all of which are decent.
None of the audio is outputting or annoying, although there is room for improvement. The Voice acting was terrific, and the effort put in was evident. Each voice reflected the character’s personality and could be described as a perfect fit.
Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki didn't get much hype, and it's understandable considering its odd start. However, as it progresses, Tomozaki becomes a more likable character. It's good enough to get a Season 2 and is not a bad fit for newbies or veterans. Overall, this Anime is recommended to any fan, as long as the theme or genres don't repulse them. What you have here is an excellent little series from which there is a lot to walk away with.
