Bokura No
Have you ever come across an anime series that is exceptionally pessimistic yet optimistic at the same time? Bokura No is one such anime that is full of tragedy as well as hope. When it comes to conventions and cliches, Bokura No sets itself apart from them. Unlike many mecha anime, Bokura No does not force us to see flashy battles where there’s destruction everywhere, nor does it have any primary characters that might bore you.
So, if you’re interested in knowing more about Bokura No, scroll down and read our in-depth review for this series. Let’s tell you more about Bokura No, its strengths and weaknesses, and how it differs from other Mecha anime.
There is a summer camp where 15 children, eight boys and seven girls, are enjoying their time together. During the summer camp, they end up in front of a grotto. When they enter the grotto, they find a mysterious room with many computers and a man named Kokopelli. Kokopelli tells the children that he’s the owner of this place.
He also tells them that he’s in the process of producing a game featuring a giant robot that is supposed to save the earth from 15 different alien invasions. Kokopelli asks the children to sign a contract that will help him test out this new game. As soon as the children sign the contracts, they find themselves piloting the giant robot named Zearth one by one. They must fight the enemies or else they’d be killed. Afraid of getting killed, the children have no choice but to pilot Zearth. Will they be able to get themselves out of the mess Kokopelli put them in?
You might think initially that this is yet another regular mecha anime with regular battles. Yes, there are battles, but they are not regular at all. They are unique and not overused. The plot itself is pretty impressive with the concept of 15 children and 15 different alien invasions. The premise feels interesting when you first look at it, and when you watch the anime, it’s just amazing. It’s not only battles. Bokura No has a much deeper meaning that we viewers are supposed to figure out. Those who only seek enjoyment while watching this show might be disappointed. However, those who really like to analyze and find deeper meanings in anime, they’re definitely in for a treat.
This anime is depressing! As we said earlier, it is pessimistic and optimistic at the same time, some moments make us sad, but some light moments keep you going through as well. That’s how Bokura No creates a perfect balance of pessimism and optimism.
Each one of the fifteen children gets its own arc, and that’s a bit surprising. They have some sort of conflicts that they need to work on before the battles. At first, you may think that knowing all the 15 children at once is such a hassle. However, when each of the 15 children gets their arc when they’re supposed to pilot the giant robot and when they’re explored separately, then we get to know them even better without feeling bored. This is such a strong point about the plot of this series.
Overall, the story is pretty exciting and unique. Things will get really depressing and weird right off the bat, and each episode will also end with a cliffhanger. We absolutely loved how the story turned out and have no complaints about it.
Bokura No has a massive caste. Each of the characters in this anime series is given decent screen-time, and all of them serve some purpose as well. Though the children might feel more mature than their age, it only makes sense because of their situation. All of them have issues that they need to deal with. We get to know about their issues and problems in their individual arcs. Their issues are pretty realistic and relatable. We can’t prefer one character over the other because all of them are very well-written and well-made.
We are served with elementary art, nothing crazy or special. The colors are pretty washed out. There is no brightness or use of flashy colors. However, we think that this anime would have benefitted from some vivid colors and detailed character design or background. Mecha anime isn’t Mecha without some heavy details. Animation isn’t something this anime excels in, but it’s okay overall.
The music of this anime series certainly makes up for the disappointing animation. We loved the opening soundtrack of Bokura No, and it goes well with the anime’s theme. The lyrics of the opening soundtrack describe the feelings we are about to feel while watching this anime.
The voice acting and the background music are pretty average, and there’s nothing special about them. However, everything else works out pretty well. So, we have no complaints about the sound and music of Bokura No.
Bokura No was a strong series that forced us to think. There are hardships, but there is hope too. There’s depression, but there’s a ray of light too. So, if you’re into something tragic yet something involving lighthearted moments, you need to check Bokura No out!
