Mushi Uta
Mushi Uta is the kind of anime that was either going to be a gem or a complete disaster when we looked at its premise. It was yet another sci-fi and fantasy anime that involved bugs; Huge and creepy bugs. Bugs might be a sign that this anime is not just for anyone, and not everyone will like it. However, if we set the bugs aside and focus on the main plot, we might find something worth watching. Read on to find out more about it! So, today, we’re going to do our in-depth review of the anime Mushi Uta and find out if it’s a hidden gem or a complete disaster.
The story opens in the new future. We’re shown ten years before the actual opening when giant insects pop up out of nowhere. The insects were called “Mushi.” The Mushi can grant people supernatural powers but at the expense of their dreams.
We’re shown the future where the protagonist Kakkou comes across a girl named Shiika Anmoto. Both of them become close friends. However, Saisuke does not know that Shiika is one of those people who managed to escape from the prison of Mushi called “Garden.” Garden has a military force that is trying to track Shiika down. There is another girl named “Ladybird” who is opposing them and is willing to fight them. Will Shiika be able to save herself from the deadly Mushi?
Mushi Uta’s plot has many issues. One of them is the protagonist destroying Shiika’s Mushi. That is something that will definitely hook the viewer and make him know more about the situation. But who Kakkou and Shiika actually are? Why did Kakkou destroy Shiika’s Mushi in the first place? There sure is a mystery, but we get to know about the entirety of the situation in episode three. So, the entire air of mystery is long gone.
We also see that both Kakkou and Shika have come across each other before their second meeting. Why do they not remember the meeting? Now, Shiika has amnesia, so it’s okay for her to forget things. But why can’t Kakkou recognize her? These are some questions that are left unanswered, and they leave a bad taste in our mouths.
The “resistance” that the Ladybird leads also does not make sense. They are literally four teenagers. There’s also this one episode where everyone has lost hope. Shiika is the one who took them out of the dark, but we’re not told how. Everyone seems happy in the next episode. The lack of details is what’s the most disappointing in this anime series.
The story does feel interesting at the start, but the lack of explanation completely ruined our experience. We would’ve loved to know about some characters’ past but did not wholly explore them. So, the plot lacks a lot and is just a complete mess.
There’s certainly a love triangle going on between the three main characters, Kakkou, Shiika, and Rina. It’s just not interesting and engaging, to be honest. As Kakkou, he’s very violent and is all cool. But when he enrolls in the school, we see him becoming listless and lazy, with 0 charms. This transition looked really off. There’s no consistency with his character. While he’s supposed to hide his identity, he always manages to do something stupid to get unwanted attention.
And then we have Rina, who we thought was a pure tsundere. However, she calmed down and became the opposite of how she was initially. She lost all her personality and became bland. Shiika is another flat character with no personality quirks. She’s supposed to be the story’s centerpiece, but because she has nothing much to say, she’s constantly side-lined. There are no other compelling characters in Mushi Uta, and the ones that had potential are ruined as well.
The animation for Mushi Uta is quite disappointing as well. We understand that sometimes it’s hard to animate certain things, and they are bound to be a mess as well. However, we noticed that most of the scenes with literally no action or not much going on are a complete mess. There’s no excuse for such lazy animation. The character design is a total disaster, and the action scenes are just okay. There is no effort put into the animation of Mushi Uta.
The opening soundtrack is enjoyable. It’s pretty decent, and you wouldn’t mind listening to it with each episode. The ending soundtrack is something that we loved. It’s sad and emotional, fitting perfectly with Mushi Uta. The background music is also just okay. There’s nothing to talk about it. Everything with the music department was pretty okay.
Mushi Uta is a mediocre anime series with a very uninteresting plot. Had it been explored properly, it would’ve been a fantastic anime series. The last two episodes were brutal to watch as the quality dropped considerably, and everything was very unclear. But if you want to watch it because of its premise, then you should check it out and come to a conclusion on your own! We don’t recommend this anime.
