To fit in and avoid hurting loved ones, we sometimes hide our true selves. Perhaps we distanced ourselves from a hobby or pastime that really brought us joy and excitement in an attempt to be socially accepted and “normal,” but doing so robbed us of a spark that we so desperately needed to keep going in this chaotic world. Perhaps we will undergo positive transformations, or perhaps a life-altering event will strike with such force that there's no way back.

The Anime is based on the Light Novel series of the same title, which began publication on the 26th of July 2018, and is still ongoing thanks to the work of author Ootori Nana and artist Satsuki. A Manga series with the same title was also released on the 5th of June 2019 and is still ongoing, and is the work of the same author, but with artist Hoonoki Sora. It is targeted at the Josei demographic and is being serialized in Regina. This series was also published digitally in English by AlphaPolis via Alpha Manga, and the volumes have been available there since the 31st of March 2023.

The series focuses on protagonist Scarlet El Vandimion, who has always preferred to deliver justice to wrongdoers with her destructive fists. But as her name implies, she is of noble lineage, and such brutish behavior would only soil their name, so, in an attempt to maintain their reputation, she chooses to suppress her instincts and tolerate whatever abuse is caused by her childish fiancé, the Second Prince Kyle Von Pallistan. Meanwhile, Kyle's brother, who is the First Prince Julius, is well aware that there’s more to Scarlet than what’s visible on the surface, despite her not caring about his growing interest in her.

Everything changes during the middle of a ball, however, where Kyle uses the opportunity to accuse Scarlet of harassing a commoner girl named Terenezza Hopkins, who had actually captured his heart. This nullifies her engagement to the Prince, leaving Scarlet utterly outraged that all her tolerance over the years has amounted to nothing. Thus, she puts her foot down and dons her trusty studded leather gloves once more, reverting to the "Mad Dog Princess" feared by many for the right reasons. Now accompanied by Julius and werebeast Nanaka, our unrestrained MC is more than ready to give the corrupt nobles a taste of their own medicine, even if it is served one punch at a time!

We are often told that violence is never the answer, that a verbal argument should not escalate into a physical fight because there are always better ways to solve problems. So what if a new anime MC came along and just said, “Nope,” followed by a ferocious punch? That’s Scarlet for you, and I greatly enjoy her for it. We all endure all sorts of struggles and hardships, often burying our true selves to avoid stirring the pot, but this pent-up stress is never a good thing, and it may very well explode at some point.

You see, this storyline is not complicated at all; it follows a very linear path with a pattern you can easily catch on to: scummy people exist, and their faces deserve a rock-hard punch that will be engraved into their souls, so much so that they won’t commit wrongs again. Scarlet is the character dishing out just desserts, a girl who is presented as a villainess at first but is quickly distinguished as a vigilante as the show progresses. In fact, the only villainous thing about her is that she resorts to violence pretty fast, but is that even a bad thing in this case? Basically, once she lets go of everything holding her back, she requires an ample supply of faces to pulverize and thus travels the kingdom to meet her daily quota. Fortunately for her, the area is teeming with despicable aristocrats, slave traders, thugs, and others, all of whom serve as delectable targets for her punches. So yeah, there’s no complex or overarching storyline in the first three episodes; it solely focuses on the main character punching people who truly deserve it, and this straightforward concept is very enjoyable to watch unfold.

It’s not like this series lacks anything of substance either, because it makes an effort to explore political and societal themes amidst the violent fun. It vividly shows the detestable lifestyles and behaviors of those with fame, fortune, and power, and how people are treated regardless of their standing, and so on. Still, it doesn’t delve too deeply into those matters because it veers right back to Scarlet landing the most satisfying punches on everyone who deserves them. This girl is so unhinged that, when she isn’t pummeling someone through infrastructure, it feels so out of place that even other characters point it out. And yes, she can be pretty one-dimensional in this regard, but once again, it’s too early to tell.

There are some minor hitches of note, however, because almost everything is predictable. Scarlet will always hit her mark, and I could always guess who was going to get pummeled next. This is also a Shoujo series with its classic romance tropes that I have grown tired of over the years. For example, all the desirable male characters shall and will fall in love with our female brute, BUT almost all of them will get punched in the process, too. If a male character exists that doesn’t fall in love with her, they are a certified punching bag. While this is a flaw, I cannot stress enough how comedic it all is, and props to the expert execution of this show. The creators know exactly what they’re doing and fully embrace it.

In the Art and Animation department, I cannot emphasize enough how outstanding the first episode is. First impressions are essential, and this premiere episode really does “knock you out of the park” with its production values. We see the events of the synopsis play out in full splendor, with dazzling colors, neat-as-ever line art, stunning character designs, and, most importantly, flowing animation that is so satisfying to watch. Yes, we are talking about punches here, and I cannot stress enough how excellent the visuals and sounds of said punches are. I did feel the quality drop slightly as the episodes progressed, but wherever it fell short, the comedy made up for it, and I found myself enjoying every punchline regardless. There’s so much charm and style in every single frame that I couldn’t help but appreciate the artistic genius poured into such a simple premise. They always seem to find a unique new setup for Scarlet to throw her punches in, and all the landings have been so satisfying so far; it's kept me undoubtedly entertained. Scarlet is the “One Punch Woman” of this season, where each of her jabs is a work of art flowing like a river and meeting its target with all the impact of a meteor collision.

“May I Ask For One Final Thing?” is definitely one of my favorites this season, and the reason is neither intriguing storywriting nor complex multi-dimensional characters. It is a simple yet thoroughly enjoyable show that knows its strength and capitalizes on it: a badass woman who will not hesitate to throw the nastiest of punches at people who deserve it, doing so with indisputable style and charisma that you can’t help but love. I intend to watch this show until the very end and can safely say it delivered better action than “One Punch Man Season 3.”
