‘Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun’ (“Mairimashita! Iruma-kun” or "Enrolled Demon Iruma!") is a manga adaptation that spanned 44 episodes, with the first season having 23 episodes of 23 minutes each. It aired from October 5, 2019, to March 7, 2020, on NHK Educational TV. A second season aired from April to September 2021, and a third season is set to premiere in October 2022.
It was written by Kazuyuki Fudeyasu and directed by Makoto Moriwaki, while its producer was Yūsuke Fujita. Studio Bandai Namco Pictures did the animation. The series was licensed by Crunchyroll, Sentai Filmworks (home video), SA/Sea, and Muse. It featured comedy, fantasy, and supernatural genres alongside themes like Isekai, mythology, school, and demographics of shounen. It received a rating of PG-13 for teens 13 or older.
Iruma Suzuki is a fourteen-year-old boy who struggles to support his abusive parents, who do not care for him. He has a personality that makes it difficult to refuse polite demands and a virtually superhuman ability to dodge physical attacks due to his parents' ongoing abuse. Iruma's parents sold his soul, so the demon Sullivan abruptly kidnaps him and takes him to the Netherworld, a.k.a. the demon world.
Due to Sullivan being jealous of his buddies Levy and Belial for constantly boasting about their grandkids, he plans to adopt Iruma as his adored grandson. Iruma accepts Sullivan's request to enroll in the Demon School, called Babyls, just to learn that Sullivan is the school's director at the opening ceremony. In school, he must conceal his human identity or risk being devoured by a fellow demon student.
Sullivan forces Iruma to deliver a speech in place of Asmodeus, the first-year representative who was supposed to do so. Iruma impresses and terrifies the kids by reading a speech that Sullivan gave him, which was actually a deadly spell to keep Iruma from tripping or seeming ridiculous. Iruma even proceeds to reject Asmodeus' challenge to a duel after he feels offended by Iruma's gesture.
The other pupils believe Iruma is unwilling to defend himself because he views Asmodeus as weak. Sullivan's magic keeps Iruma from falling forward when Iruma tries to save a girl in the audience who was about to be wounded but unintentionally knocks Asmodeus out by flinging himself backward in a German suplex. Iruma became well-known at the school due to this incident, something he neither expected nor wanted. Iruma is soon surprised when Asmodeus happily announces that he will pledge his loyalty to Iruma, touched by Iruma's kindness in carrying him to the infirmary. As such, Iruma appears to have a promising future in the Netherworld, which pleases Sullivan greatly. Since Iruma barely received any education in the human world, like any regular kid his age, he tries his best in the Netherworld to do so. But will he be able to stay out of trouble? Will he be a legitimate candidate for the position of the next Demon King?
Iruma gives the impression of being a people-pleaser even at his own expense and is extremely sensitive to the words "help," "please," and "I beg you." He is exceedingly nice, despite the shocking negligence he received from his parents. He was exposed to many situations at an early age and worked many jobs to support himself. He gained excellent adaptation, survival abilities, and agility due to these peculiar experiences. He is memorable thanks to having a cowlick and blue, slightly extended, and spiky hair. When engaging in physical activity and serving in the student council, he wears his hair in a short ponytail. He has stunning blue eyes and is frequently seen wearing defiant expressions. His pleasant, cheerful face belies his deep anguish, which appears to happen often in the real world as well.
Iruma's best friend and most loyal companion is Asmodeus Alice, whom he calls “Azu kun,” who initially seemed hostile and challenged him to a duel. Iruma is the object of Asmodeus's typical servile behavior; he treats him with the utmost respect and makes every effort to win his heart. He is also prepared to do things he dislikes to achieve a goal Iruma has set for him and would not hesitate to attack anybody who undermines Iruma. Asmodeus is a tall, elegant-looking lad with gorgeous pink hair and magenta eyes who flashes adorable fangs whenever he smiles. The pair grows warm towards each other quickly.
On the other hand, Sullivan doesn't seem frightening at all. Instead, he has the wise-mentor appearance of "Uncle Iroh" from The Last Airbender, much taller and leaner. The two's relationship was initially a little awkward, but they get closer when Iruma starts referring to Lord Sullivan as "grandfather" and shows him evident compassion and care. Iruma is shown to be highly grateful for Sullivan's treatment, to the point where he starts to doubt whether he wants to return to the human world. Sullivan is seen to be very protective of Iruma and enjoys spoiling him with video game consoles, lush food, clothes, and many other things. Additionally, supporting characters like Clara Valac (Iruma’s 2nd best friend), Amelie Azazel, and Kalego Naberius add so much more color to the series.
The animation is incredibly colorful and appealing, as it should be for a pleasant, lighthearted shounen anime. It is basic but fluid and has a fantastic backdrop—all in all, a brilliant department.
Akimitsu Honma composed the series music. The music is quite upbeat, as shounen themes should be. Da Pump's "Magical Babyrinth" is the title theme, while Yu Serizawa's "Debiky" is the closing theme. "No Satisfaction! Satisfaction!" by Da Pump serves as the second season's opening theme, while "Kokoro Show Time" by Amatsuki serves as the finale.
This show is full of hilariously evil characters and sinister gags. It's funny but also has elements of terror, violence, and romance. You can easily stay interested thanks to the excellent story and the engaging humor that will keep you chuckling. In conclusion, an awesome anime is highly recommended if you're looking to escape reality!
