Kakegurui Compulsive Gambler

Kakegurui is a gambling-themed anime. The series is intriguing because the games utilized in the anime are unique, and the writer has been meticulous about the methods. The suspense is maintained throughout the anime. If you enjoy tension and thrills, this is an excellent anime to watch.

Kakegurui sets in Hyakkaou Private Academy, a famous institution or should I say a high-society school for the affluent, where the children of Japan's wealthiest and most powerful people go.

This covers the country's future leaders as well as professionals from other professions. A student body hierarchy is a given in such an institution, and it is often based on academic success or athletic talents.

Kakegurui, on the other hand, takes this and flips it on its head, as this is not the case in this particular institution. Gambling itself serves as the foundation for the hierarchy. Their ranking is determined by the amount of money they donate to the Student Council, which is then used to build and sustain a gambling system in which students wager money against one another as an after-class pastime.

Winners get not just money and fortunes but also notoriety, prestige, and valuable connections. The losers also lose far more than they need to, with some even going into debt and becoming "house pets" or slaves to the rest of the student body.

About the Characters

Here is my take on the main characters of Kakegurui Compulsive Gambler:

Yumeko Jabami

Yumeko Jabami is a fresh Hyakkaou student with a few gambling tricks up her sleeve. Yumeko, unlike her colleagues, does not gamble for social status at Hyakkaou. She does it for the adrenaline rush.

Yumeko is liked by her classmates for her beauty and personality from the start. But it's her ability to recognize when her peers are attempting to deceive her that really impresses, if not frightens, them. She enjoys gambling for sheer pleasure, uncovering cheaters, and wants her friends to share in her high. Don't let her kind attitude fool you: when the chips are down, she's as frightening as they come.

Mary Saotome

Mary Saotome is a sadistically mad student famed for winning whatever match she puts her sights on when she is first presented. She mocks her adversaries and even mistreats those of a lesser social class, such as Ryota Suzui, her indebted "housepet." Yumeko defeats Mary in the first episode by revealing how her opponent has been cheating. Mary takes the setback hard, and her only goal is to reclaim her top spot from then on.

Ryota Suzui

Ryota Suzui is Kakegurui's other protagonist, alongside Yumeko. Ryota is branded Mary Saotome's personal "housepet" after losing a gambling match to her. Compared to the other characters, Ryota is very level-headed, as evidenced by his gambling matches versus the student body. Yumeko's thrill-seeking attitude eventually rubs on him, making him a better gambler and a supporter of the practice.

Itsuki Sumeragi

A first-year student paid her way into the student council, Itsuki is your classic "queen bee," sweet as honey at first, but with her love of painted human nails, she quickly exposes a nasty side. By the way, this is entirely literal: Itsuki collects other people's fingernails, particularly those of individuals she likes.

Yuriko Nishinotouin

Yuriko Nishinotouin appears to be one of the kinder student council members. But, like her peers, it's all a ruse. She's just as cunning, and she has no qualms about neglecting those from lesser social classes just because they're inferior to her.

Midari Ikishima

Midari Ikishima is a member of the student council and a second-year student. Midari, unlike many of the other members of the council, is forthright about her psychopathic tendencies. Suicidal and masochistic inclinations are evident in her behavior, particularly in the gambling activities she engages in.

Is It Worth Watching?

The answer is yes and no. Mappa did an excellent job with the animation. The animation in the anime is fantastic. There are no fillers in the anime, which has a total of 12 episodes. Before you begin watching this anime, you do not need to make a big commitment.

If you've been watching anime for a while, you might be able to finish the first season in one sitting. This anime is also a nice change of pace if you've been watching a lot of action and shonen anime. Every episode is captivating, offering a new gambling game with enormous stakes and unique rules.

This anime may appear to be rather good at first, and the plot seems to be promising, but it quickly devolves into chaos. Throughout the anime, the thrill will reach a point where it will feel normal. Because the anime is so short, there isn't enough time to develop the plot and build the suspense.

The description of the games and their flaws and techniques takes a long time to explain, which is supposed to be the best part of this style of anime, but it may be tedious at times.

Hands down, the animation was brilliant. Initially, I was unsure if I would enjoy the animation. I assumed it would be a conventional high school anime with a dull plot and predictable outcome. And boy, was I mistaken. The animation is vibrant, and it appears to be quite inviting.

To be honest, I wish I lived in a world like that. Kakegurui is a stunning work of art, from the architecture to the characters. The view is very breathtaking. It has a certain edge to it, yet there is a lot of information about the key people and the setting. The skin of the characters is one of my favorite aspects. Although this sounds silly and wild, studio MAPPA manages to make it look sleek and smooth.

Kakegurui Compulsive Gambler was a refreshing change of pace from the typical old topics employed by authors and producers. The characters in this one-of-a-kind world are fascinating. Yumeko's ruthlessness is admirable, and she is a profoundly lovable character.

The student council is also a delight to behold. Characters that you just want to despise. I spent most of my time wishing they would get what they deserved. I am afraid you'll have to see Kakgurui yourself to find out if they did!
