Gosick

The detective theme in the world of anime is intriguing. Gosick is one that incorporates the detective story in it. It also has some slice-of-life moments. It was originally a Light Novel adapted into an anime in January 2011.

The detective stories repeatedly follow the same formula, giving us some conclusion in the end. Gosick used the same recipe, but will it provide us with something new? Let’s learn more about it in our review of Gosick!

We’re introduced to a very prestigious boarding school named Saint Marguerite Academy in the country of Sauville in Southern Europe. Kazuya Kujo is an international student from Japan enrolled in the academy.

Because of Kazuya’s black hair and brown eyes, his fellow students nicknamed him “Black Reaper.” Apparently, the Black Reaper is a part of an urban legend and is said to bring death wherever he goes.

One day, Kazuya goes to the library searching for some interesting ghost stories. On his way, he finds a golden strand of hair on the stairs and gets intrigued by it. He is led to a beautiful golden-haired girl named Victorique de Blois.

A lot of mysterious things start happening around the campus. Kazuya and Victorique must work together to solve the mysteries because of their god-gifted skills. A ghost ship and an alchemist appeared as well. This girl is very imaginative, and her foresight makes her predict the future.

The premise of Gosick is very intriguing. There are subplots, and the minor one shows the little mysteries Kazuya and Victorique solve. The major one allows us to get involved in some crucial issues. The main problem lies with the little mysteries that Kazuya and Victorique had to solve. They were too easy to predict by us viewers.

Another problem with the anime getting adapted from the novel is that certain aspects and charms are lost in the process. For example, the mystery aspect got weak when visualized in the anime. And because of that, the mysteries were highly predictable to us. That’s how the secrets lost their charm.

However, we noticed something good about the plot. The story progressed slowly but not too slowly to make us bored. It kept building up and was necessary for foreshadowing certain events in the near future. Overall, the plot and story of Gosick are not too bad and not too good either. However, it is delightful and intriguing.

Gosick is hugely character-driven. All of them serve as plot devices. We love the interaction between Kazuya and Victorique. They made a great team and complemented each other well.

Kazuya is your average hero that does not seem courageous at first, but when other people are in danger, he miraculously becomes tough. And that’s the best thing about Kazuya. We can relate with Kazuya as viewers because when Kazuya is left in the dark, so are we.

The characters in Gosick are very well-written. Victorique is cold and emotionless, while Kazuya becomes more open and social. That’s how the two complement each other perfectly. There are no complaints.

The animation of Gosick is splendid. It suits the overall theme of the anime well. Everything is heavily detailed, and the characters look very clean and basic. Additionally, their dresses were heavily elaborate, and that’s how they should be! The landscapes look extremely beautiful. Studio Bones did a great job animating the series.

The music of Gosick has a mysterious and intriguing vibe. Both opening and ending soundtracks are very catchy, and you would love to listen to them repeatedly.

The opening soundtrack gives you happy and fresh vibes. Now, many fans say that the ending soundtrack is better than the opening one because it matches the vibes well, which is true. You might notice some repetition in the music in the anime.

Overall, the music department did well and knew what they were doing. We commend them for creating such great music. But the enjoyable music makes up for the repetitive tone, so everything’s good.

Even though the mysteries were straightforward to solve at first for us viewers, the mysteries started getting bigger and better. Each episode got us hooked to it and kept us at the edge of our seats. Gosick combines several different themes and serves us with something exciting.

The most enjoyable aspect of this anime series is the relationship between Victorique and Kazuya. The process of their bond slowly building and getting strong is something that we liked watching. So, Gosick is a highly recommended anime, and every person who is a fan of mysterious stories should watch it!
