My Status as an Assassin Anime Brings 90s Vibe to Fall 2025
So I'm sitting here reading this premise for an upcoming anime; it has a premise very similar to a Fall 2024 release known as "The Loner Life in Another World," and as soon as I see it, I'm like, "Damn, that's the same anime, just with a different variation." However, as I continue reading and researching, I discover that this series is being praised for its 90s anime aesthetic. The question, however, is which 90s anime aesthetic we are aiming for: the Big-O aesthetic, Cowboy Bebop, or perhaps a bit of Cyber City Oedo 808?
I find myself thinking that if you're going to sell me a similar story, adding a '90s anime vibe will definitely capture my interest. What's that one meme from Rick and Morty? You know, the one that says, "Damn it, I'm all in." Well, I’m in.

My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's will feel familiar, particularly to fans and viewers of class-abduction isekai, such as the previously mentioned "Loner Life." An entire class of high school students is summoned to another world. The protagonist, Akira Oda, discovers his Assassin class status, and his abilities far exceed those of the designated Hero. The plot involves suspicion of the kingdom and questions of trust regarding figures like the Knight Commander, Saran. Fans of isekai will find common ground with this series, as Akira has that gift of high intelligence seen in characters like Seiya Ryuuguuin (Cautious Hero: The Hero Is Overpowered but Overly Cautious) and Akatsuki Ousawa (Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero), though I doubt he’ll be as horny as the latter nor as frustratingly cautious as the former.

My Status as an Assassin Obviously Exceeds the Hero's (also known as Ansatsusha de Aru Ore no Status ga Yuusha yori mo Akiraka ni Tsuyoi no da ga). It is an anime from Fall 2025 that premiered on October 7, 2025, and for those interested, the series is currently available for streaming on Crunchyroll and Muse Communications. The series is classified as an isekai with action, adventure, and fantasy themes and is based on an online novel by Matsuri Akai, published on Shōsetsuka ni Narō (since January 26, 2017). It adapts the Light Novel written by Matsuri Akai. The Light Novel is published by Overlap (Overlap Bunko), illustrated by Tōzai, and licensed and translated into English by Seven Seas Entertainment. Additionally, there is a Manga: Illustrated by Hiroyuki Aigamo, serialized on Overlap’s Comic Gardo (since July 10, 2018), and licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.

The animation is a collaborative production by TMS Entertainment (under the "Unlimited Produce by TMS" banner), Warner Music Japan, and Kanon Sound. Sunrise, known for works like Mobile Suit Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, and Code Geass, is handling the animation, with Nobuyoshi Habara directing. Habara's previous directing credits include Space Battleship Yamato 2202, Break Blade, Fafner: Dead Aggressor, and Kyoukai Senki. Kunihiko Okada, the series' composer, has contributed to Demon Sword Master of Excalibur Academy, Eminence in Shadow (script), Magic Kaito 1412, By the Grace of the Gods, and Ishuzoku Reviewers. Akira Suzuki is the Art Director. Character designs are by Kaori Saito (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury) and Hirona Okada (Gundam Build Metaverse). The original character designs for the light novel were created by Tōzai, who also designed the characters for Eminence in Shadow LN.

Given the current excitement around anime, my expectations for this series are high. Based on what I have observed from the involved staff and after watching the first episode, I believe that fans of isekai and those who appreciate the trend of excellent series this year can confidently say we are in a feast era of anime.
