The story takes place in the year 2157, a time in the far fantasy future where humanity has long since abandoned Earth owing to its toxic atmosphere. But the present is where we find the Gingarou Hotel, a quite luxurious establishment located in Ginza, Tokyo, that employs advanced hotel robots as its employees to deliver best-in-class hospitality. But due to the unfortunate circumstances of the once-green planet, the hotel has had no visitors for decades and now exists devoid of practical purpose. Yachiyo, the "acting manager," tirelessly works alongside her mechanical companions to ensure the hotel remains in top condition. But as the years pass, many of these robots have ceased functioning and have no hope of repair or replacement in sight. Even so, Yachiyo presses on by fulfilling all her duties every day, because she had once promised the hotel's owner to do so before his departure. Even with the odds stacked against her, she remains optimistic that humanity will return to Earth one day and patiently awaits the fateful day when she sees the owner again.

The story itself is basic, with each episode showing us how these robots strive to keep the hotel running while awaiting humanity's return to Earth. The important thing here is not the beginning or the end; it’s all about the journey to be experienced alongside these robots as they somehow translated the concepts of hotel hospitality into an anime. Each chapter of this journey centers around a specific concept, demonstrating a profound understanding of the subject matter. What’s more, the writers were not afraid to experiment and get creative every step of the way, since there was no source material holding the reins either. They tend to play around with the passage of time a lot, because a tale told in human years won’t make sense to robots, so it will skip any number of years between five and five hundred without fear, relaying the events with impact and keeping the timeline relevant. This premise is masterfully used to show us how these robots evolve in their own way, eventually leaving behind their roles as mere automatons and becoming the new denizens of planet Earth. The hotel itself will go from a rundown, abandoned building to a venue thriving in its golden age, and you can bet that this narrative element conveys events very effectively through the lens of robots.

Each episode also features slightly different genres, keeping things dynamic and interesting, be it a sequence about romance, detective mysteries, drama, comedy, action, silent films, or, honestly, whatever floats the boat. This writing choice keeps the series fresh and engaging, while the creators go ham with their creativity under each umbrella. We can appreciate the beauty of this simple setting, the gimmick that propels it, and the world-building that enhances the series. Robots stationed in a post-apocalyptic world are nothing new, but these are working tirelessly while waiting for their human masters to return from deep space. Even though they aren’t human, the emotions they bring forth to the audience are so raw and genuine, be it inspiration, wholesomeness, or melancholy, without being set in an inherently depressing atmosphere. The message conveyed is nothing short of heartwarming and beautiful, serving as a reminder of the capacity for humanity in all of us.

The characters driving his show are robots whose human creators are no longer around, learning to think for themselves and develop their own personalities over time, showcasing their growth in the process. It starts slowly, because if you judge by the 3-episode rule, you won’t be seeing much from the characters, and they appear to have very one-dimensional writing. Still, you start to see their steady improvement over time, especially if you pay close attention. They are a group of robots who clean and maintain so happily and willingly, taking immense pride in their work even though no customers show up. Regardless, they have continued to do the same work for thousands of years, eagerly awaiting the day someone shows up at their hotel. Their unwavering nature easily won me over, and their passion for living a fulfilling life, even in such a bleak and lifeless world, is ever more inspiring.

After some time, I was wondering why I felt so strongly for such robots with no precedent, but here we are. These robots are essentially fueled by the ever-so-slight possibility that humans might return to Earth someday, which would mean people could flood back into the Gingarou Hotel in droves. This is the very hope that the main character, Yachiyo, clings to alongside the hard work it demands. The oddly melancholic atmosphere is well thought out and hopeful, occasionally distracted by the simple joys of cleaning, wacky animal customers, insane action that has no right to be this positive, and even by exploring the hotel's far reaches. The robots also maintain a fun and joyful atmosphere, often seen dancing, having parties, or going on misadventures while the sad reality looms in the background. The characters' unity conveys that their world will never be the same, but that's acceptable.

Every aspect of the Art and Animation department is visually stunning. The real winners in this department are the backgrounds and scenery, especially when combined with the OSTs that create a serene, immaculate atmosphere. The set designs have such outstanding care and effort that you can pause at a random frame just to appreciate all the details in these post-apocalyptic settings. I love moments when I can just take in the beauty of their desolate world without words. No matter how bleak it looks, I won’t mind being there and becoming a guest of the hotel. Why? Rather than making me fear such a future, it showed me how endearing humanity's creations can be when made with the right intentions and passion. The color palette is very pleasing and easy on the eyes, fitting perfectly with the hotel theme and also excelling at welcoming you into the show. As a guest at this hotel, you can see the two receptionists' antics to keep it running. The animation is top-tier, which I honestly did not expect, and the art style and design themes are spot-on and worthy of being hung on a wall.

The Sounds and Music department demonstrates an equally impressive level of skill and effort. The opening theme is "Skirt" by aiko, a unique piece that is difficult to describe in words. It’s a slow jazz theme that builds and ends on a slow note again, showcasing Yachiyo dancing alone in the dark hotel, which has clearly been abandoned by humanity. Her fellow robots join her, and everyone looks joyful regardless of the circumstances, and you can feel the hope they have for humanity’s return through the screen. The song concludes with Yachiyo standing alone in the darkness and bowing, reinforcing the harsh reality once more. The Ending is another saddening piece featuring a split-screen sequence of Yachiyo tending to the hotel alone while the animal characters tour the world in a picture-book format. Eventually, they make their way back to the hotel, concluding on a poignant note, but the slow piece accentuates the poignancy of the situation.

Overall, “Apocalypse Hotel” is a truly unique show that has no right to be this enjoyable and hard-hitting. The show maintains a slow, wholesome pace that perfectly fits the narrative style they aim for, and the directing skillfully brings everything together seamlessly. The comedy is mild but thoughtful, making sure the series doesn’t get too serious and remains enjoyable. The best installment is undoubtedly Episode 9, which boasts a unique premise in anime and strikes a perfect balance between drama and comedy, making it almost impossible to replicate. The underlying message is about humanity and its creations on our beloved little planet, forged through countless sacrifices and hardships. This is such a heartwarming, funny way to present it, so I highly recommend this show to anyone.
