“Home is but the people in it” is a common saying you may have heard in one form or another. It emphasizes how home is less about the place and more about the family and friends who dwell there. It is a place of comfort and love because of these people, and it’s always nice returning there after life’s arduous trials and tribulations. Even if one’s blood family is not around, there are many with found families, brought together by unbreakable bonds, who care for and look out for each other. So no matter what, at the end of the day, we aren’t truly alone.

The anime is based on the web manga of the same title, which ran for 3 volumes from the 9th of July 2021 to the 2nd of February, 2024. It is the work of author and artist Nanateru and was serialized in Comic Newtype. A sequel manga series titled “Alma-chan Wants to Have a Family! Z” (“Alma-chan wa Kazoku ni Naritai Z”) began publication on July 19, 2024, and is still ongoing, written by the same author. An alternative version titled “Tensai Kagakusha-tachi ga Saikou no Robot wo Tsukutta Manga” was released as a single-volume doujinshi on the 23rd of May, 2021, by the same author as well. It was made available as a web manga on the author's Twitter and Pixiv accounts from the 12th of February until the 19th of June, 2021.

The series centers around the titular Alma, which is the short form for “Apotheosis Loyal Maneuver Arms," the proud flagship prototype of the talented researchers Enji Kamisato and Suzume Yobane. Over the years, these two gifted scientists have grown disillusioned by the arrogance of their peers and have sought to live life differently. Despite having originally been designed for combat, Alma, too, must, ironically, live her life far from any battlefield. Now she is fine-tuned to suit ordinary society and shares a modest household alongside her creators. While learning the subtleties of being a human girl one step at a time, she also experiences how the self-proclaimed rivals and now her parents, Enji and Suzume, remain completely oblivious to their affections for each other, regardless of how obvious it is to everyone else. Alma begins watching every one of their exchanges with methodical precision, not deceived by the slighted, as the lovable duo continues their qualms and quarrels under the guise of research. She also adapts to the tranquil rhythm of a homely life, finding comfort in the everyday shenanigans that keep their found family going.

The story is basic: Alma wishes to live life as a normal child, and her creators-turned-parents decide to oblige. After that, it’s a continuous series of situations in which Alma does something new and then learns what her actions mean as a real child. Maybe she herself triggered the chain of events and then grew into the scenario that showcased practical development. This is slice-of-life at its core, so do not expect next-level fights, mysteries, romance, or character development that would have you singing praises. The show itself is self-aware and does not attempt to be something it’s not by being too over-the-top. There are a few minor scenes that could be considered such, but the show usually sticks to the basics, and you can easily enjoy it if you go in with moderate expectations.

I thoroughly enjoyed the sheer wholesomeness of the series, supported by its comedy and romance, as these two scientists develop their own little AI robot possessing insane capabilities. Their child experiences many things, such as going to school and making friends. But as she is still a robot, an invisible wall forms between her and the other kids because Alma doesn’t fully understand them, which even invites plenty of shenanigans. Contrary to her initial battle purposes, her parents raised her to be helpful to society, making her quite altruistic and good-natured. No matter how pure her intentions, hilarious situations are guaranteed to occur, and the comedy builds up around them. The relationships built and interactions occurring within the main and supporting cast are also a key focus, because this makeshift family naturally matures into the real deal, and eventually everything feels so natural. Meanwhile, the potential romance taking place between the fake mother and father also creates a comedic dynamic.

In the character department, Alma steals the show as the MC, and there is no doubt that she is a highly sophisticated robot lovingly crafted by two genius scientists. She is pretty bland at the start, a blank slate, you could say, but each episode gives her new experiences, and we see her personality develop. Enji and Suzume are undoubtedly geniuses in their field, but their social skills are terrible, and you can guess how well their interactions with normal people go. We feel their depth more as we are made aware of their dreams of becoming accepted as scientists, and, thanks to their consistent romantic tension, the trio develops together through the ups and downs. The remainder of the cast, including Alma's younger sister Makina, who shows some level of development, are a blast to watch, and honorable mentions go to Omoikane Tokoyo, Wozniak Neon, Kamisato Toki, and Yashiki Hana. They all embody common archetypes and tropes, be it an older sister, a schoolmate, a rival colleague, a rich friend, and so on, but this never diminished the watch for me, even if they underwent minimal development. Why? They are simply fun and relaxing to watch. Furthermore, the focus here is more on the jokes and situations these characters create than on the depth of each member, another area where the series is very self-aware.

In the Art and Animation department, I found the art style very adorable and well-suited to such a comedy series. All the line work and colors are simple, neat, and wholesome, making for a comfortable watch that isn't jarring in any way. I didn’t notice any lapses in the animation either, while the character designs and backgrounds are pleasing to the eye. The visuals do not shy away from being goofy when needed to suit the comedic moments, which I enjoyed.

The sounds and music department is one of the most chill audio departments I’ve heard in a while. The opening theme is "Dramatic Overlay" by ZAQ, and the Ensign theme is "Arifuretetai" by KAF, both of which are bangers, with the latter bringing feelings of warmth, belonging, and wholesomeness. ZAQ is a band known for its rock music, so it was nice seeing them deliver such a cutesy piece alongside the Technoboys. Pulcraft Green-Fund was quite surprising. The OSTs, on their own, are largely forgettable, simple pieces that also remain self-aware of what they're trying to accomplish. The voice actors, particularly the main trio, deliver stellar performances, with Tsukishiro Hika, Ichimichi Mao, and Suzuki Ryouta bringing calm, relaxing comedy and wholesome interactions that had me giggling.

Overall, “Alma-chan Wants to Be a Family!” is a decent watch for anyone seeking out a cute, calming, and wholesome series to watch after a hectic day. It is a slice-of-life series disguised as all the other tags, preferring to play it safe and take no creative or narrative risks whatsoever. It is meant to be consumed exactly as it is, and the daily shenanigans are the heart of the series, so if you find yourself rolling your eyes over them, it’s a good idea to drop it. But if you find yourself laughing at all the absurd scenarios these lovable characters get into and appreciate how they grow from those experiences, I highly recommend you keep watching!
