The Misfit of Demon King Academy
In conventional terms, Demons are fearsome and coldhearted monsters spawned from the depths of hell. Yet, in Anime, more often than not, Demons are hot men and women with incredible powers and intellect. We cannot help but fall in love with Anime’s take on Demonkind, be it for their badassery or sass.
Knowing this, the industry had put forth many titles revolving around Demons, misunderstood characters who learn to grow and coexist with humankind. Who are your favorite Anime demons? They come in all shapes and sizes with various personalities and abilities. Below is an infamous Demon series that spread like wildfire, but why?
“The Misfit of Demon King Academy,” also known as “Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou” or “History's Strongest Demon King Reincarnates and Goes to School with His Descendants” is a 13 episode TV Anime series that aired from the 4th of July until the 26th of September, in Summer 2020.
It was produced by Aniplex and Kadokawa, licensed by Aniplex of America, and brought to life by Studio SILVER LINK.
The central staff behind it includes Nakayama Nobuhiro as Producer, Tamura Masafumi as Director, Oonuma Shin also as Director, and Naya Ryousuke as Sound Director. It featured Action and Fantasy genres alongside Mythology, Demons, and School themes. It received a rating of R - 17+ for its violence and profanity is best suited for mature audiences.
The Anime series is adapted from the Source Light Novel of the same title. It began publication on the 10th of March 2018 and is still ongoing, as the handiwork of Author Shuu and Artist Shizuma Yoshinori.
The Anime series is set to receive a sequel series titled “Maou Gakuin no Futekigousha: Shijou Saikyou no Maou no Shiso, Tensei shite Shison-tachi no Gakkou e Kayou 2nd Season” soon, which will be split into Part 1 and Part 2 for release.
Before the onset of the main story, a brutal war was waged between humankind and demonkind, bringing widespread chaos and bloodshed in the distant past.
Planning to put a decisive end to this seemingly endless and carnage-ridden conflict, the almighty Demon King Anos Voldigoad willingly sacrificed his own life, hoping only to be reborn someday into a more peaceful future.
After his demise, the demon race planned ahead and made preparations for their great king's return, creating the Demon King Academy. This place was to be an elite institution bearing the tremendous task of determining the one-and-only Anos' identity whenever he reawakened.
Two millennia later, Anos finally reincarnates but is surprised to discover that the level of magic in their world had drastically waned and faltered during the period of his absence. To make matters worse, when he enrolls at the academy to reclaim his rightful title as King, he learns that demonkind remembers him quite differently.
His personality, deeds, and even legacy have all been falsified and masked underneath the name of some impostor. Added to his troubles is the fact that he lacks the common knowledge of this time, rendering him the academy's outlier, a misfit that was never before seen in its history.
Regardless of all these drawbacks, Anos faces the situation unfazed. He thus sets out on a path to uncover all those who are altering his glorious past, and even he takes it upon himself to make his descendants ultimately recognize that their one true ruler has finally returned.
The Misfit of Demon King Academy is yet another Anime following the overpowered Fantasy trope. Protagonist Anos Voldigoad checks every box under a character with too much power. Added to that are the lack of a creative story, an engaging cast, and an overall well-developed series. Anos exists in this present timeline following his reincarnation as one of the most powerful beings on the planet.
This is more than mere myth or legend, as viewers can see the extent of Anos’ insane abilities, be it magic, intellect, experience, or raw power. He is pretty untouchable, but his problems lie in being labeled a “misfit’ and nothing more.
Regardless, he is just too OP, and he overwhelms his enemies without even batting an eyelid. In his eyes, this life is a mere game that he won't even take seriously. Initially, he is simply enjoying his days and isn’t as malicious as expected.
In contrast, Anos respects those who are loyal, like his female classmates and those with vast amounts of magical potential. All in all, he is an overly stereotypical character with little to no character development because his potential was there from the start.
The Story progressively portrays Anos’ journey to regain his former glory as Demon King, bumping into formidable rivals along the way. His opponents include other students and even Demon Emperors. Sadly, none of these characters are developed and seemingly only exist to push Anos further towards his goal.
So much so that every confrontation is a chance to show the audience just how much of a powerhouse Anos is. These fights don’t develop either, thanks to the nature of his powers, with each of them being repetitive and placing too much emphasis on magic.
The creators tried to add some psychology to these moments but failed to make viewers feel anything unique or memorable. This show is just all about Anos Voldigoad.
The remaining characters of The Misfit of Demon King Academy do not hold onto nor deliver much potential either. Anos runs the bandwagon from dusk till dawn, and nobody can even hold a candle to him. Sasha and Misha are the two main supporting characters whom Anos believes have a lot of potential.
Sasha is a prodigy possessing unique eyes and magical talent, which are nothing compared to Anos. Sasha may stand above her classmates but is a mere insect in Anos’ world. Misha is the younger twin sister of Sasha, who also has a powerful magical capacity.
Anos states that she may someday surpass him in creative magic, but all viewers can see is a fragile girl with few friends. In fact, Anos is one of the few characters that at least looks her in the eye and shows her kindness. Sasha and Misha have a complicated relationship where they rarely see eye to eye, but this improves later on.
Sadly, the story does not properly explore their characters as a whole and just leaves them at that. The other characters are almost non-existent and contribute nothing to the series, serving only as stepping stones for Anos.
The Art and Animation of The Misfit of Demon King Academy range from decent to mediocre; there is nothing that stands out and nothing terrible about this department either.
The character designs and outfits were probably spawned with the “Academy” trope in mind. Only Anos, Misha, and Sasha stand out and become somewhat memorable, even visually. In an attempt to emphasize their powers and abilities, the Anime fitted them with aesthetic eyes symbolic of their powers, which are pretty badass from a visual standpoint.
The settings and backgrounds are pretty generic and lackluster, too, missing any attractive appeal because it's just the same as any Fantasy Anime academy.
There is nothing notable about the Sounds and Music of The Misfit of Demon King Academy. The Opening theme is "Seikai Fuseikai" by CIVILIAN, and the Ending theme is "Hamidashimono" by Tomori Kusunoki. Both are okay, neither good nor bad, and the OSTs are forgettable. The Voice Acting is decent, but nothing praiseworthy.
Overall, The Misfit of Demon King Academy is somewhat of a tease, attempting to get viewers to buy the Light Novels to enjoy this series fully. Sadly, it does not do a great job either. It ends up being another lousy anime adaptation.
If you enjoy watching a series all about overpowered Demon Lords, then this show is for you, and you will enjoy it at best. However, if you are someone on the lookout for an appealing story and unique characters, turn away now! Nothing is exciting or superb about this one, so it is not recommended unless you're a big fan of the featured tropes.
