In Another World With My Smartphone
In Another World With My Smartphone is yet another isekai anime with a strange name. Anime fans’ relation with the Isekai genre has always been love-hate. An isekai could be amazing or awful. In Another World With My Smartphone does sound interesting, but does it fall under the excellent isekai or the bad isekai? Find out more about it in our in-depth review.
The story starts weirdly. We see God accidentally hitting Touya Mochizuki with a bolt of lightning, killing him. God then offers Touya a chance to restart his new life but in a fantasy world. He also tells Touya that he will grant his one wish. This was his way of apologizing to Touya for accidentally killing him with lightning.
Touya accepts his offer to get reincarnated in a fantasy world, and for his one wish, Touya asks God to let him take his smartphone there. His desire is granted, and he is sent to a fantasy world to start his brand new life.
Touya loves the concept of magic, and he absolutely loves his life in this new world full of magic. Touya also comes across many girls who give him all the attention he wants. He decides to live his life to the fullest in the fantasy world full of magic.
The first issue with this isekai anime is that it’s generic. It tried to be as good as Konosuba but failed miserably. We’re not adequately explained how magic works in this new world. We’ve not explained the guild system, and the money system works either. There’s a lack of world-building, which is the first thing that puts the anime fans off.
The story is quite simple, and there’s nothing complex about this. The viewers are not going to get confused while watching it. It’s also very predictable, and when an anime story is predictable, it stops being fun to watch.
There’s also little to no tension in this anime series. Even if there is tension or conflict in the anime, it would've vanished because of Touya’s overpowered magic. There are a lot of moments, mainly slice-of-life moments, that just don’t add up. They feel weird in the isekai setting. There are a lot of issues with the plot and the story. The generic and bland storytelling and the setting contributed to the failure of this anime.
The biggest problem with the characters is that they remained the same throughout the anime series, personality-wise. There was no character development, nor any growth with the characters. Their personalities remained the same throughout, making the characters seem really bland.
Another problem is that the characters didn’t get enough backstory. Even the main character, Touya, didn’t have any backstory. We don’t know anything about his past life, which doesn’t feel right.
His character is exceptionally bland because he doesn’t have any goal in the new world. He doesn’t want to achieve anything, nor does he react to most things. All of these things make his character very generic.
The female characters that are with our MC also don’t have any background and are just like our MC, lacking goals and ambitions. We’ve come across many generic and uninteresting characters in this anime. The fanservice is pretty prevalent, though.
There is a lack of detailing in the animation. The background doesn’t seem very detailed. Even our characters aren’t heavily detailed either. All the characters look the same except for their hairstyles, hair color, and eye color. We get to see a lot of static characters when our main characters are in a crowd.
When we look at the fight scenes, they’re not very clean either. They’re a mix of static and dynamic action scenes, which really puts us off. Overall, there is nothing special about the animation, and minimal effort and budget are put into the animation process.
While this anime's opening and ending songs are decent, the background music is off-putting and cheap. The voice actors did a decent job. There isn’t much to talk about in the music department.
In Another World With My Smartphone lacks in a lot of ways. It lacks humor, fun, action, and thrill. It’s just another boring isekai that tried being unique but failed miserably. The premise did sound exciting and even had potential.
But due to the lack of worldbuilding, character building, and good animation, this anie became a huge disappointment. We won’t recommend you watch this anime because it will only frustrate you.
