Zombieland Saga
A WHOLESOME TAKE ON THE IDOL GENRE
The idol genre has been a part of the world of anime for many years now. However, it is pretty hard to make something unique and exciting while sticking to this genre, as you always have to follow a similar type of premise that focuses on the journey of an idol group.
Zombieland Saga is an anime that takes an entirely new approach towards the genre and gets all of us hooked. The humor in this anime is pretty decent, and despite generally portraying a light-hearted mood, the anime can get pretty serious and emotional at times. The first season of Zombieland Saga aired back in 2018, and a sequel titled Zombieland Saga Revenge will start airing in just a few days.
Zombieland Saga’s plot follows a girl named Sakura Minamoto whose ultimate dream is to one day become an idol. However, her plan comes to a close when she dies because of a sudden car accident. Ten years later, Sakura wakes up again, but she has no memories of her past life. The girl soon finds out that she is actually a zombie!
She had been revived by a guy named Koutaro Tatsumi, who explains that he has revived her for the purpose of saving Saga Prefecture. Koutaro has resurrected seven different girls from different eras to form an idol group and become its manager. The girls decide to name their idol group Franchouchou!
Zombieland Saga shows us the struggle of these seven girls named Yuugiri, Lily Hoshikawa, Saki Nikaidou, Tae Yamada, Sakura Minamoto, Ai Mizuno, and Junko Konno as they try to win the hearts of all their fans while hiding the fact that they are actually zombies.
Despite how the plot makes it sound, Zombieland Saga is not just a parody of the idol genre. This anime can be hilarious, emotional, and shocking at the same time. While at first, the anime seems quite light-hearted, after a few episodes, we start to learn more about the girls themselves’ individual lives and begin to understand them. Zombieland Saga is quite entertaining as the story gets more and more interesting with every episode, and the anime does not get repetitive.
My second favorite aspect of Zombieland Saga is the brilliant animation. Handled by the legendary anime studio MAPPA responsible for many gems like Jujutsu Kaisen and Dororo, the animation of Zombieland Saga is perfect. The art-style itself is not much different from other modern anime, but the animation has excellent fluidity that gets you completely immersed in the show.
Being an anime about an idol group, of course, Zombieland Saga has a lot of original songs, and the performances look breathtaking. The anime does use CGI from time to time, but it still looks pretty good.
The characters of Zombieland Saga are what truly bring it to life! The brilliant cast of relatable characters is my favorite aspect of Zombieland Saga. While they might not seem like much at first, you start to find out more about all of these zombie girls’ past lives and learn about their struggles as you progress in the story. These girls have pretty realistic personalities, and these personalities further develop along the way. Unlike most other idol anime characters, the girls in this anime are not just represented by using certain traits, and that is what makes them seriously likable.
Let’s take a closer look at all the main characters of Zombieland Saga:
Yuugiri:
Being from the oldest time-period, you’d think that Yuugiri would have the most challenging time fitting in with the group. However, that is certainly not the case. This 19-year-old girl from the 80s might be a bit old-fashioned, but she is always ready to try new things.
Lily Hoshikawa:
Lily is the youngest girl in the entire group, and she died pretty recently. Lily used to be a child actress in her past life! She acts pretty sweet and approachable most of the time, but she also turns into a completely different person from time to time.
Saki Nikaidou:
Saki is the tomboy of the group and my personal favorite girl! While she can be annoying at times, Saki truly cares about the success of Franchouchou. She used to be a complete rebel in her past life as she was a part of an infamous biker gang.
Tae Yamada:
Not much is known about Tae Yamada as she just acts like a zombie all the time. Well, she is a cute young girl, so the group needs her!
Sakura Minamoto:
She can be referred to as Zombie 1 as she is the lead protagonist of the story. Sakura used to be a normal high school girl who dreamt of becoming an idol in the future. Now, it seems like the girl finally has a shot at achieving her dream.
Ai Mizuno:
Ai Mizuno used to be the lead singer of the top idol group from the 2000s called Iron Frill. She is also the girl that Sakura used to look up to when she was still alive. Ai has a very likable personality as she is always honest with her feelings.
Junko Konno:
Junko also used to be an idol, and she is 19 years old. This girl is more used to solo performances, so she has a tough time getting along with the group.
Koutaro Tatsumi:
Of course, we can’t just forget these girls’ manager and the best character in the entire series! He is determined to achieve greatness, and he doesn’t let common sense block his path. Koutaro is always ready for anything!
Zombieland Saga is one of the most entertaining idol anime that you can watch right now. The humor in this anime is just perfect, and the show beautifully blends it with the serious aspects of the story to give us something delightful. Every episode is a new and wholesome adventure for these girls!
Zombieland Saga is certainly not the type of anime that every anime fan can enjoy, so I would only recommend this show to the people who are looking for something light-hearted, funny, and wholesome.
