Kill la Kill is one series that completely captivates me, even though I had no expectations or knowledge of its plot. It is one of the anime series that I have enjoyed the most. Despite the show seeming lighthearted, it contains one of the most engaging plots I have ever encountered. So, without further ado, let's start with the review.

Studio Trigger launched Kill la Kill as their debut series, bringing together a dream team of creators. Director Hiroyuki Imaishi and writer Kazuki Nakashima, fresh from their success with Gurren Lagann, wanted to tell a different story. While Gurren Lagann reached for the stars, Kill la Kill turned inward, examining the relationship between power and identity. Character designer Sushio created memorable designs that tell stories even in still frames, while Hiroyuki Sawano's music amplifies every emotional beat.

This story takes place in the Honnouji Academy, where the students have uniforms that give them different powers and abilities. Student council president Satsuki Kiryūin enforces the rules by force. However, an exchange student named Ryuko Matoi stands in her way. Matoi, wielding a scissor-shaped sword and wearing a school uniform that is alive, will fight to find out who the murderer of her father is. Kill la Kill's story is simple: a girl with a half-scissors sword is searching for her father's murderer. She arrives at a school where the student council president governs through a dictatorship where the richest have money and better uniforms with superpowers. It might sound ridiculous, and maybe it is, but it is way more fun than it appears. More things happen, but that would be putting us in spoiler territory.

Kill la Kill's brilliance lies in how it layers meaning beneath the chaos. What starts as a revenge story evolves into an exploration of identity and power. The Life Fibers aren't just alien threads; they represent how society shapes us through conformity. Even the fan service serves a purpose, challenging our views on shame and empowerment. Without ever sacrificing its untamed energy, each episode reveals deeper themes by peeling back another layer. Unlike many other works where "showing meat" aims to attract a particular sector, the fanservice in Kill La Kill plays a vital role in the story. And this series would not be the same without it. Let's see, let's not kid ourselves. It is evident that, in part, they want to attract more of the public by showing meat. But the style of the drawings and how they deliver those situations shows that more than exciting, they seek to make us laugh and have some concordance with history.

Hiroyuki Imashi is talented at writing memorable characters that contribute their grain of sand to the series's development. In that sense, he does not sin to have filler characters since each is presented in a valuable way to the plot. To avoid doing a 10,000-word review, I will only focus on the main characters. We have Ryuuko, the main character, a tough girl with a solid and aggressive personality. Her life was not easy. She became a shell to protect herself from it. But she shows that she is sweet and kind to the people who matter to her, and they see beyond what she appears to be and gain her trust. Throughout the series, she and her uniform, Senketsu, learn the value of friendships. And the confidence to believe in herself. Her character development might seem strange because she sometimes makes illogical decisions that make you question her character development's authenticity. But still, I became very fond of her.

The antagonist, Satsuki, is a serious girl with tremendous authority (no matter the angle, she will always see you as if you were an ant). My favorite character in the series shows the importance of loyalty and honor. Her character carries the weight of impossible choices—a daughter plotting against her mother, a dictator whose iron rule shields others from a greater evil. Even her theme song, "Blumenkranz," tells her story—German lyrics about a rose's thorns protecting its bloom. Every stern glance and commanding pose masks a deeper purpose, making her character arc feel earned when her true motives emerge.

Mako might seem like comic relief, but she's the heart that keeps Kill la Kill beating. Her poverty and pure spirit contrast sharply with Honnouji Academy's power structure. Those random freeze-frame rants? They're not just funny; they cut through tension with simple truths when other characters lose their way. Through Mako, we see how friendship can anchor someone even in life's craziest moments. Her family's acceptance of Ryuko shows that true strength often comes from the simplest acts of kindness.

Beyond our main cast stands the Elite Four, each bearing the weight of their convictions like well-worn armor. They are mirrors, reflecting different aspects of power and loyalty that run through Honnouji Academy's halls. Ira Gamagoori towers over all, a mountain of muscle and rules, yet his eyes soften when watching over the student body, particularly Mako. Honnouji's struggle between rigid discipline and natural compassion reveals more about his true nature than any speech. Sharp as her tongue, Nonon Jakuzure holds the memory of a young Satsuki before rebellion bent her shoulders. Houka Inumuta hides behind data and screens until forced to face the messy reality of human connection. Then there's Uzu Sanageyama, whose pride led him to blind himself—a physical sacrifice that speaks to the costs of true strength.

Aikurō Mikisugi plays his part with careful precision. The bumbling teacher's act peels away like his clothes, revealing layers of complexity. His dramatic poses and glowing accessories mask a man who carries the burden of Isshin Matoi's legacy. Through his partnership with the grim Tsumugu Kinagase, we glimpse the long shadow of the war against Life Fibers—a battle fought in darkness long before Ryuko grabbed her scissor blade. Each character moves through their orbit around Honnouji Academy's power structure, yet together, they paint a portrait of loyalty deeper than mere obedience. They remind us that the human heart drives the story forward, even in a world of magical uniforms and alien threads.

The art in Kill la Kill tells stories even when characters stand still. Every frame carries meaning—when Life Fibers dominate, colors fade and become muted. When characters break free, the screen explodes with vibrant energy. Even with a tight budget, Studio Trigger turned limitations into strengths. Those still frames people joke about? They're perfectly timed for dramatic impact. The simple character designs let their personalities shine through every expression and pose. The faces and expressions that the characters make are funny. The colors used throughout the series are great and give it great flair. The sets are pleasing to the eye, and occasionally, the purposely made still frames that appear at critical moments are incredible.

The budget for creating the anime was meager, being the first original series of the studio. Well, nobody starts with a lot of money in this business. This was reflected in the animation as it glitched from excellent to mediocre. Trigger knew this very well but tried to go beyond the economically feasible. They gave us scenes that I just realized have cheap and low animation. However, the studio's talent made these moments of the quality downturn not noticeable, which took a lot of work.

The voice actors did more than a phenomenal job. It is easy to see that they put in all their effort and had fun doing it, transmitting it to whoever is listening. The series OST is probably the point where everyone, lovers and haters, agrees. It's great. It's one of the best anime soundtracks to tell the truth. The composer is the incredible Hiroyuki Sawano; if you don't know him well, to give you an idea, he has worked on Shingeki no Kyojin, Guilty Crown, and Ao no Exorcist, among others. Some songs make use of voice, which is rare to find in anime. Like Blumenkranz, Before My Body is Dry or “I Want to Know” will stay in my memory forever. All the songs fit the tone of the series very well. (An extra fact is that recently, we can enjoy this full soundtrack on Spotify.)

Kill la Kill left me a changed anime fan. Yes, it's wild and breaks logic at every turn, but that's what makes its more profound messages work so well. Studio Trigger took significant risks, mixing serious themes with outrageous action, using fan service to challenge rather than just fascinate, and trusting viewers to find meaning in the mayhem. It's wild and profound, just like the best anime should be.
