“Osamu Mikumo's Ability”
I feel that Osamu will be one of those characters you can’t help but admire. He is not physically strong, but his honor and intelligence make up for those deficiencies. He has a soft spot for those in danger and will rush headlong into trouble without the first thought of his own life. That’s not always the best course of action.
With the school now under attack in episode 3 and students running frantically to find shelter, Osamu must decide the best course of action. As a trainee, it is against the rules for Agents in Training to use their Triggers outside of Border HQ, but this is a different situation. In the past, Border could keep the Gates confined to a central location, making it easier to fight the Trion Soldiers that pass through. Unfortunately, the situation has changed, and Gates are opening in areas outside the Border HQ confinement zone. To escalate the matter, the Gate that has opened near their school is too far from Border HQ for additional agents to arrive.
So Osamu, whose favorite Patron Saint must be St. Jude does what he does best; rush into situations despite the outcome. Now I’ve said nothing about Yuma because he’s not fighting. He’s the voice of reason. He warns Osamu that it would take twenty Osamus to defeat one Marmod, the current Trion soldier attacking the school. Marmods are prominent arachnid-looking soldiers that have a hard coating and three eyes. They are different than the slug-like creatures that appeared in episode one.
Nevertheless, despite the tactical disadvantage and the warning that he would be killed, Osamu goes in anyway. Lives are on the line! But the real question is, will Yuma, a Neighbor, assist him in the chaos? What do you expect him to do? Who cares? Osamu activates Raygust, his Trigger, and heads into battle.
There is an underlying motive driving Mikumo to save others, and after ordering his classmates to the roof, he faces down the first Marmod. Now to his credit, he is somewhat of a tactician and realizes his small size gives him an advantage. However, the Marmod he faces is quick and comes equipped with a few surprises; a pincer slams Mikumo against the wall. An ordinary person would have passed out from such a blow and would have indeed been eaten, but Mikumo has a Trion body. His Trion body is a blessing in disguise, as it doesn’t affect his natural body when he loses an arm. Using his Trion energy allows him to withstand numerous attacks and makes him impervious to most conventional weapons.
Now let me say this Kuga is an ass for asking, “will he be alright.” You just told him he would die; it does add to the humor and the fact that he is following Osamu’s advice to stay hidden from Border. Nice going, Osamu; you shut down the one person who could save your life.
There is an unspoken rule amongst Bros, which is that you don't allow your brother to needlessly die in combat even if you are from different dimensions. So after a brief conversation with Replica, he heads down from the roof and goes to help Osamu. Osamu had earlier told him to go to safety. There is a problem, though, Kuga can’t use his Black Trigger, or he’d give away his identity. Now, as the fight is brewing, Border isn’t sitting around resting on their hands; a unit is en route.
Made up of Kitora, Mitsuru, and Jun, they are five minutes away, but Osamu is nearing his limit. His Trion body is cracking, and he is about to return to his average body. With tension building and Osamu realizing his demise, the Marmod he was fighting begins to strike. Remember, it's Bros before blows, and Yuma arrives in the nick of time, and let us just say he’s a true Master.
Though victorious, all is not as it seems. There were a few rules broken, but we’ll skip that part; for now, the most important thing is our heroes survived, and I can take a breath. The fight scenes were well animated, and while frames make the Marmods appear imposing, their big teeth make me wonder if they tell jokes when they kill you. That probably makes little sense, so you’ll have to see a picture to grasp what I’m referring to.
Border finally shows up late to the dance, and they are none too thrilled, probably because Osamu is receiving all the praise. Yuma is a good friend, and their relationship is further solidified as Kuga hypes up his Bros fighting abilities, much to the dismay of Osamu. Arashiyama Squad is an A-Rank unit of Border. To put it in perspective, Osamu is C-Rank. Osamu is an agent in training.
Though they're initially curious about who defeated the Trion soldiers, Jun-Jun is relieved that his siblings are safe. He makes that point extremely clear to Mikumo overlooking the rules. Kitora has her doubt. She unleashes Scorpion, her Trigger, and easily cuts through a Trion soldier. She’s not a fan and orders Jun to ensure Osamu is punished according to the rules. Though she is not in charge, She rebukes Jun, Squad Leader, for going too easy on him. It’s apparent she will be a thorn in Osamu’s side. The unease on Osamu’s face is clear, and I’m afraid to know what will happen next. I doubt Yuma can save him from Border's punishment.
