World Trigger
“Neighbor and Trion Soldier”
So he can kick ass and take names, but he has no idea how the world or Japan even works. Osamu is a Border Agent, and Kuga is a Neighbor; a quick recap runs right into the second episode, and the saga continues.
There is a saying that no good deed goes unnoticed, and I have a feeling that in this episode, Yuma may find himself under the lens of the Border Defense Force faster than expected, and this is not because Osamu is a Border Agent. Kuga’s actions in defeating the invader from beyond the Gate have placed him on the radar of responding units curious about who defeated the creature. Osamu is also curious or nosey, whichever way you want to spin it. Luckily for him, the duo escapes and can discuss this critical detail privately.
As you know, shounen anime friendships form quickly, like two five-year-old boys at a playground. There are exceptions to this rule, but not here. Kuga is very assertive and lives by a code of honor. Kuga is not a fan of dishonesty and possesses the ability to read body language. Though he has sometimes bent the truth, Kuga can be a bit naive, going as far as sharing secrets about his origins.
For someone so young, his emotions are well-grounded, and finding himself in an unfamiliar generally doesn’t phase him, though, as seen in the first episode, he is prone to emotional outbursts. His counterpart Osamu share’s similar traits but is more of a diplomat. This doesn’t help him with bullying, but his lack of ass-kicking ability does place him in the position of teacher of all things Japan. Things like the value of money, food, local laws, and not walking out in the street are all things Yuma needs to know. The latter, especially as episode two marks the second time Yuma has been hit by a car. Were it not for Replica, Yuma would have been killed or severely injured.
Replica makes his appearance in episode one. Not much is known about him, but he acts as an extension of Yuma, providing details on the world around him. Replica is generally hidden, speaking to Yuma via an extension that reaches his ear. Other times he can be seen floating in the air. Replica seems to have a general concern for Yuma’s wellbeing and is probably the closest thing he has to a parent.
Though popular in school, Yuma is a bit of a loner, and so is Osamu, so it's only proper that these two should bond. The irony is that Yuma is vastly stronger than Osamu, but Osamu, who was initially suspicious of him, takes on the mentor role. This is either due to his self-righteousness or the fact he has had to mature quickly for an unknown reason.
Nevertheless, both boys carry a great deal of baggage, and though this episode focuses somewhat on Yuma and his past, I’m sure we’ll get to Oasmu’s history soon enough. Hopefully, we’ll also learn why Osamu is so amazed by Yuma when that time comes. It’s one thing to delight in discovering the alien, but it's another almost to appear needy.
One perk about being the resident badass is that you’re constantly attracting enemies. Whether you're Gojo, Goku, or Yusuke, someone always tries to fight you and steal your shine. What would this episode be without a few enemies? Probably a Bromance. We get a Brodown as Trion soldiers make their way through the school.
Trion Soldiers come in various shapes, sizes, and strengths. They are not Neighbors who are humanoid beings from beyond the Gate. Instead, Trion Soldiers were created by the Neighbors for fighting. They also seem to be attracted to Yuma. For obvious reasons, I’m sure.
As the assault ensues, we see students running everywhere. It is Ms. Amatani, the student seen reading in class in the first episode. She is seen running with her classmates but stops when she sees a Neighbor. Her brief moment ends with her saying, “But,” as her teacher grabs her hand taking her to safety.
The creators did an excellent job episode. There is enough humor and action, and the voice acting was fine. I had no complaints with the OST, and I’ve accepted that sometimes a pair of glasses will have a missing arm, and sometimes it won’t. Yuma has established himself as my favorite character though the same can not be said of Osamu. He reminds me somewhat of my play brother, who sometimes can be an overbearing bore. But kudos to his resolve. He loses to bullies, but when it comes to putting life on the line, he is all in. With that, I’m looking forward to episode three.
