Vatican Miracle Examiner
Miracles do not occur daily. However, when something seemingly impossible happens that appears to be the result of some supernatural forces, it falls upon the Assembly of Saints' as well as their agents' to investigate. That’s the story in Vatican Miracle Examiner.
Their mission is to evaluate whether each episode can be explained by previously unreleased material, is part of a scheme to exploit the public's faith, or is a genuine miracle.
When priests Josef Kou Hiraga and Roberto Nicholas are dispatched to Mexico to investigate allegations of a virgin birth, they find themselves in jeopardy of being buried. Murder, as well as demonic summoning; tag along to learn more about Vatican Miracle Examiner.
Joseph Kou Hiraga and Roberto Nicholas, two Vatican priests, are tasked with traveling the world in search of authentic miracles and denouncing frauds. As partners, they complement each other as competent scientists and diligent cryptographers. However, they have discovered in their work that some people will go to any extent to have their miracles validated and that some "miracles" are really a cover for something considerably darker and frightening.
Vatican Miracle Examiner is an anime adaptation of a Dan Brown thriller like The Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons, based on a series of light novels by Rin Fujiki. Like the real one, this Catholic Church has a branch dedicated to confirming the veracity of purported divine miracles, which is a requirement for sainthood.
Therein lays the pretext for Josef and Roberto to be deployed around the world from the Vatican. Before you set your expectations high, let me make it clear that the Vatican Miracle Examiner isn't intended to be anything other than a detective story.
Overview of Characters
Let’s have a brief overview of some of the main characters of this anime:
Joseph Kō Hiraga
He’s a young Japanese Vatican priest in charge of looking into purported miracles all across the world. He has a natural aptitude for math and science, which helps him scientifically research miracles.
Roberto Nicholas
He's Joseph's investigating partner, an Italian priest who knows a lot about syncretism and theology. He is enamored by ancient knowledge and books, and he is fluent in several ancient and foreign languages.
Archbishop Saul
He is the head of the Seat of the Saints and a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, making him one of the Vatican's most prominent officials. He has a strong regard for Joseph and Roberto's dedication, to the extent of shielding them from disciplinary action if required.
Lauren Di Luca
He is a young Italian hacker who is well-known around the world. He is a genius with an IQ of over 200 who has been involved in terrorist acts and other crimes all around the world. Following his arrest by the Italian government, the Vatican took him to jail in order to take advantage of his extraordinary abilities.
The Vatican Miracle Examiner is presented in a 1.78:1 widescreen 1080p transfer that is rather good. It's crisp and clear, with vibrant colors and fine detail, as well as a well-thought-out environment and character design. The amount of digital banding is what you'd expect from an anime with so many dark sequences, which is a little disappointing.
You don't realize how restricted the animation is until you start watching the show. Pans over motionless imagery or characters providing monotonous exposition are the most common. In what is essentially a highly aesthetically beautiful slideshow, there isn't much motion or even animation.
In Japanese, the show receives a DTS-HD MA 2.0 Stereo sound with locked-in English subtitles. The audio is flawless, conveying the language clearly and effectively reflecting whatever action is taking place. The characters all talk in that strange lilt that anime portrayals of Christian clergy have, which can get annoying after a while.
There was a time when every priest on British TV had to sound like Derek Nimmo, and while I realize how handy a clichéd shortcut may be, you need a little more variety when the majority of the cast is priests.
Is It Worth it?
The anime is a lot of fun to watch. It always keeps you on the edge of your seat, wanting to see how the next piece of the puzzle is revealed in the following episode. It also never slows down; it’s a crazy journey with only a few calmer sequences to explain things from beginning to end. However, is always some kind of thrill! The concepts are all unique and unusual, so if you're looking for an anime that will keep you guessing and attempting to figure out the mystery, Vatican Miracle Examiner is the show for you.
You Are Going To Catch Some Action!!
Vatican Miracle Examiner is a busy place. While there are long moments of talking or describing the situation, they are usually balanced out by tremendous action situations. Some are particularly brutal, such as the decapitations of the Motley Clown in the penultimate story arc or the horrifying sacrifices of priests in the African church.
There are several life-or-death situations as Robert and Hiraga race against the clock to stay alive, and you'll be on the edge of your seat! Every episode of the anime is packed with strong supernatural action, including weapons, murder, snake attacks, drugs, and satanic rituals.
One thing Vatican Miracle Examiner excels at is fully surprising the audience with plot twists. Before they are explained, and each hint along the line is given, the majority of the storylines behind each arc in the show appear to appear out of nowhere. But it's difficult to predict what will happen till that point. Even if Robert or Hiraga have figured out the riddle underlying the miracle, they do not tell it to the audience until they are forced.
Vatican Miracle Examiner was an anime with a lot of potentials but was never fully realized. The mystery was complicated and deep, with so many cool elements, and the plot was unique and interesting. Even the concept of priests studying miracles using science and logic was revolutionary and unique.
With only 12 episodes, Vatican Miracle Examiner, on the other hand, proved to be overly ambitious, attempting to cram too many storylines and information into a short period of time. It made the anime feel rushed and incomplete, and it left the audience with more questions than answers.
