No. 6

Anime based on conspiracy theories is intriguing and keeps us at the edge of our seats as we’re constantly anticipating something unlikely to happen. When it comes to conspiracies, No. 6 is the anime that will raise so many questions about the conflicts between the main protagonist and the society around him. However, this specific anime might not be a cup of tea for everyone, but taking a sip won’t hurt, would it? Let’s get into our detailed review of what we liked and what we disliked about this anime.

The story is set in a dystopian society named “No. 6”. On the surface, the six cities looked very peaceful and idyllic. However, there seems to be a lot more happening deep down. Shion is one of our main characters who resides in an elite city and lives a privileged life. He is an intelligent boy who lives comfortably inside the walls of one of the six cities built after a brutal war.

However, soon Shion’s life changes when he encounters Nezumi, who lives a miserable life beyond the walls of the cities of “No. 6”. Despite knowing that the boy was an ex-convict, Shion decides to let him live in his house. Shion had to pay a great price for this action as he and his mother lost their status as elites and were made to live elsewhere. There, they started to realize the darker side of the city that they were oblivious to before.

We loved the first two episodes of this anime, and they made us excited as to what was going to happen next. We feel a strong sense of mystery when we go through the first two episodes, and they raise a lot of questions in our minds. Things are finally getting exciting, and then BAM!

The story gets too slow and ends up being a generic “BL” romance anime. The anime was supposed to lean more towards sci-fi and fantasy. Indeed, some elements of Shounen-ai were also supposed to be there. But 80% of all the episodes comprised of romance and nothing else.

The plot started deviating from where it was supposed to go. Our MCs stood still all the time, and then suddenly, in the last two episodes, it came to them that they’re supposed to be doing something that revealed the mystery behind the “No. 6” cities.

Instead of focusing on the crisis that our two characters were supposed to overcome, we get to see their bonds getting strong and a very weak story about gay romance. Some fans might think they got trolled. However, if you’re a fan of “Shounen-ai,” then you might take a liking to this anime.

Studio Bones did a pretty decent job in designing the characters and giving them very realistic personalities. There is a visible difference between the main characters’ personalities, which lights the spark between the two. Both the personalities of Shion and Nezumi progressed well with the story, and the way their relationship got stronger is what we really liked.

What we disliked about the characters is that they seem too generic and familiar. They might be your cookie-cutter yaoi boys who can’t live without each other no matter what. But, they did end up catching our attention and made us memorize them, so that’s not a bad thing at all. Also, you may find Shion’s character a little annoying as he’s a wimpy kid who cries a lot. Other than that, we enjoyed the chemistry between the two and the realistic personalities of the two.

The other significant character is a female character who is hopelessly in love with our main character. She’s literally doing all the things that our main character is supposed to be doing. And she’s merely doing it for his sake because she loves him, not because she wants to save humanity.

Overall, the characters are pretty simple. Sometimes they’re able to make us all excited, and sometimes, they seem just too bland.

The animation is pretty decent, and our main characters look really cute and eye-catching. The only thing that did justice with this anime genre is the animation, as there were not many bright colors used.

The overall tone of the anime was pretty dark and dull, going just right with the theme of the anime. The everyday scenery was also beautifully animated, especially the dogs and the trees. Overall, we loved the animation style and commended the creators for doing such a good job.

Both the opening soundtrack and the ending OST caught our attention because they were sung by the voice actor of Nezumi. We got emotionally attached to them just because of Nezumi. The soundtracks capture the theme of the anime and deliver it beautifully. They slowly start to grow on you.

The voice actors did a pretty decent job in delivering the emotions of the characters. However, sometimes they’re kind of cringe. Overall, in the sound department, No. 6 takes the cake.

Despite claiming to be heavy on the sci-fi elements, we get to see many “Shounen-ai” moments. This is not entirely a bad thing because some of you might even like the idea of it, especially girls (We get you).

The series had the potential to be one of the greatest anime, but it missed the mark a little with horrible pacing and tone shifting. In conclusion, No.6 is worth the watch on a quiet weekend, finishing it in a day because of its short length.
