Attack on Titan Final Season
IS IT A GOOD SEQUEL?
Attack on Titan is one of the most hyped-up anime series in the entire world. This anime is loved by millions of fans worldwide, and its latest season is currently airing. The fourth and final season of Attack on Titan is mostly getting pretty good feedback from the fans. However, some fans are not liking the new art style.
Today, we’ll be taking a closer look at all the different aspects of this sequel in the series, and I’ll be giving you guys my honest review regarding this season.
Now, without any further delay, let’s get started!
The Studio Change
First of all, let me address the elephant in the room. The first three highly-acclaimed seasons of Attack on Titan were all animated by Wit animation studio. However, unfortunately, Wit could not work on the latest and final season of Attack on Titan because of pressure from the publishing committee. Wit had to leave their extremely successful project unfinished, and some other studio had to take over. Most studios were not too eager to work on the latest season because of the short time being allotted by the production committee.
All hope seemed lost for Attack on Titan season 4 until MAPPA finally decided to pick up this project.
Did this Sequel Manage to Live Up to the Hype?
MAPPA did not even get a full year’s worth of time to complete the Attack’s final season on Titan. To meet the unrealistic deadline, MAPPA had to cut a lot of corners! The studio had to use CGI for most of the intense fights between the titans, and some 2D scenes also had to get rushed.
While some people still love it, in my personal opinion, the latest season of Attack on Titan does not live up to the hype. The “intensity” of the previous seasons is missing in Attack’s final season on Titan because the CGI seems quite underwhelming. Overall, this season is quite bad compared to the earlier seasons.
Another thing that I dislike about this season is the character designs. Of course, this is not a problem with the anime, but I disliked it. The design of the characters is quite different when compared to the previous seasons of Attack on Titan. MAPPA has tried to mimic the original manga style while also adding a hint of its own style by making all the characters a little chubbier.
Despite all of the shortcomings, because MAPPA only had a few months to animate this season, I am still quite impressed by the quality. Yes, this season does not look as good as the previous entries in the anime series, but Attack’s pacing on Titan season 4 is insanely good. As a mange reader, I can see that the manga chapters have been adapted quite loyally and the story does not seem rushed.
Unfortunately, Attack on Titan did not get the treatment that it deserved. However, every fan of the series should still watch the final season. The original story by Isayama has been depicted perfectly, and you will enjoy every episode because of all the insane twists and turns in the story.
Why is The Story So Confusing Now?
Talking about this season’s story, many fans are quite confused after watching the new season’s first few episodes. Let me give you guys a small explanation to understand what’s going on in the story.
The anime is now showing us the story of the people that live outside the walls in Marley. There is a brand-new cast of characters who live and fight for Marley. There was also a time skip after the ending of the previous season. Lastly, all of our beloved characters are adults now.
As you saw in the latest episode, our beloved heroes have returned, and they are currently attacking Marley to secure the power of the War Hammer Titan. After this battle is over, the show will take us back to the story of the people inside the walls, and we’ll also get to see a lot of flashbacks that will explain what happened during the time between seasons 3 and 4.
Will There Be Another Season?
We don’t have any kind of solid confirmation regarding this question. However, we will most likely get to see another season or a movie. This is because many chapters of the manga can’t possibly get covered in only 16 episodes. From the anime’s pacing so far, we can easily predict that the anime will only cover half of the manga’s remaining chapters.
This means that there will most likely be another season comprising 16 episodes for the second half of the remaining story. Or this could also mean that MAPPA is planning on releasing a movie that covers the remaining story.
Conclusion
I’d personally give the final season a rating of 8 out of 10 because of the fantastic pacing and extremely well-built story by Isayama. The CGI in the animation and different character designs are the only two drawbacks of this season. I believe that Attack on Titan season 4 could have turned out to be a masterpiece if MAPPA was given more time or if Wit studio was still working on it.
If you are not happy with the new season, then I’d recommend that you wait for the Blu-ray disks that will probably get released later this year. The Blu-ray version of the final season will probably still have CGI, but MAPPA will try its best to refine all of the different scenes to the best of its ability.
