91 Days Review
A SHORT ANIME THAT DELIVERS!
91 Days is an original anime that aired back in 2016. The anime is pretty popular in the anime community, and it is even described by many as a masterpiece. I believe that 91 Days is not really a masterpiece, but it still deserves a watch.
Today, I’ll be giving you guys my review of this short and exciting anime series as we take a closer look at all of its many elements.
The story of 91 Days takes place in the town of Lawless. One day, a young boy named Angelo Legusa witnesses a dreadful tragedy that scars him for life. Angelo’s parents and little brother get slaughtered by the Vanetti family right in front of him. The boy manages to survive somehow and leaves both his name and identity behind.
Angelo adopts the name Avilio and goes through some harsh training to one day avenge the murder of his loved ones. After seven years, the boy returns to the town of Lawless and befriends the Vanetti Don’s son, Nero. Now, Angelo must keep his real identity hidden and keep on helping the Vanetti family to gain their trust.
The plot of 91 Days does seem somewhat cliché and predictable. I mean, the plot makes it seem like just another revenge story with a broken main character. However, 91 Days presents its revenge story in such a way that it captivates all of the viewers.
The best thing about this anime is that it does not involve any kind of supernatural phenomena but still manages to excite us to the core. Poor Angelo has been scarred for life, and revenge is the only thing that he cares about. As the show progresses, he manages to fool the Vanetti family completely and becomes one of their most trusted allies. While revenge seems like an easy enough thing to achieve at first, Angelo soon discovers that this whole ordeal is turning him into a walking corpse.
The characters of 91 Days are what make it truly entertaining. While the plot of 91 Days is great, the anime would not be half as fun as it is right now without its relatable and interesting characters. All the main characters in the show have their own dreams and aspirations, and they are willing to put their lives on the line to achieve their goals.
The list of characters in this show is vast, and all these characters are dynamic in their unique ways. Let’s take a closer look at the two main characters in the story.
Angelo Lagusa:
Angelo is the main character in the story, and he carries an immense amount of hatred for the Vanetti family. After the death of his loving family, revenge became the only purpose in this boy’s life. Angelo is a very charismatic and manipulative guy who can easily blend in with the Vanetti family after returning to Lawless.
The boy works together with the people he hates the most in this world to get their trust. Angelo is a handsome young boy who is not afraid of facing any kind of enemy in battle.
Nero Vanetti:
Nero Vanetti, the son of Vincent Vanetti, is the very man that killed Angelo’s father, mother, and little brother right in front of him. He has a very bright and cheerful personality, and he is the current Don of the Vanetti family. Nero puts complete faith in his family! This prideful boy is ready to face all kinds of enemies for his family as he believes that only the Vanetti family should have power over the Lawless District.
Angelo becomes a very close friend of Nero Vanetti by helping him with all kinds of ordeals. As the story continues, these two boys, who are supposed to be mortal enemies, start to form a very unique type of bond that almost seems natural.
The art style of 91 Days perfectly represents the mafia-type vibe of the story. The characters have been drawn in a somewhat realistic manner, and the animation team at Shuka has paid great attention to detail. The animation itself is not one of the most substantial aspects of the show, but it is still pretty decent and leaves no room for complaint.
Since 91 Days is not a supernatural anime, you won’t find any exaggeratingly intense fight scenes. Most fights in the anime involve a gun, and they have all been executed perfectly. The intensity of all the dramatic scenes and gunfights is insane, and you will fall in love with the anime after only a few episodes.
The Dubbed Version is Better!
If you’ve been watching anime for a while now, then you most definitely know that the subbed version is almost always superior to the dubbed version. However, there are a few exceptions that show us just how good dubbed anime can be if they get handled correctly; 91 Days is one such exception.
Since this anime is set in the western world, the Japanese voices can feel a bit odd at times. On the other hand, the English dubbed version correctly captures the personality of every single character.
This anime set during the prohibition era is a must-watch show for all kinds of anime fans. 91 Days is the best show for anyone new to watching anime as it has a pretty straightforward story that does not involve anything supernatural.
I’d personally give this show a rating of 9/10 as it is one of the most exciting short anime that I’ve ever watched. As the story moves forward, we learn more about Nero’s personality, and Angelo’s quest for revenge just seems to get harder and harder.
The best thing about 91 Days is that, unlike most short anime, the story gets a fitting conclusion in the end!
