Macross 7 (Makurosu Sebun) is an anime television series directed by Tetsurō Amino, Takao Kato, and animation director Kenichiro Katsura. Mainichi Broadcasting System and Big West served as the producers for this show. It is the sequel to the program “The Super Dimension Fortress Macross," and it takes place several years after the events of the previous series and follows a brand new cast.

The show aired for 49 episodes from October 16th, 1994, until September 24th, 1995. Even though it was released in other parts of the world, it wasn't licensed in North America until July 2022, when Right Stuff and Nozomi Entertainment said they would distribute the series on home video.

This original anime had 25-minute episodes that fell into the categories of adventure, comedy, drama, romance, and science fiction. Its main themes were robots, the military, music, and space, and it was rated PG-13 for people 13 and older. Macross 7 is in the official Studio Nue Canon. Shoji Kawamori came up with the idea for the story, and he and Kazutaka Miyatake also worked on the designs for the robots.

The theatrical episode Macross 7: Ginga ga Ore wo Yondeiru! (The Galaxy Calls Me!) came out in 1995. Other notable OVAs include Macross 7: Encore and, subsequently, Macross Dynamite 7. “Macross FB 7: Ore no Uta o Kike!” is a crossover film recounting the Macross 7 events via Macross F characters, which was published in 2012.

Haruhiko Mikimoto, the creator of the Macross characters, wrote the 8-volume manga series Macross 7: Trash, which serves as a prequel to Macross 7. It was serialized in Shonen Ace magazine across 52 monthly chapters from October 1994 to May 2001 and then released as a Tankbon by Kadokawa Shoten from 1995 to 2001. Also, TokyoPop said they will work with Harmony Gold to bring the Macross 7: Trash manga to the West.

It will come out in the spring of 2004. Nevertheless, due to licensing concerns, this release was canceled. The Macross 7: Encore OVA is made up of three unconnected episodes set in the original Macross 7 TV series timeline. This plot is thought to take place between episodes 39 and 42 of Macross 7. Similarly, Macross 7: The Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! is expected to happen between episodes 38 and 41.

Macross: Dynamite 7 is a one-hour anime OVA that takes place one year after the events of Macross 7. Macross Dynamite 7 was a four-episode OVA that continued the story of the Macross 7 series. It came out in 1997 to mark the 15th anniversary of Macross. Macross FB 7: Ore no Uta o Kike! is a crossover that recreates the events of Macross 7 by following Macross F characters. Macross FB 7 was a full-length movie that came out in theaters in 2012 to celebrate 30 years of Macross. It followed the tale of the Macross 7 and Macross F series.

35 years after the end of the First Galactic War, the Macross 7 leads the 37th Colonial Fleet on a mission to settle deep space. The series shows how the fleet meets the Varauta Army and the Protodeviln, two alien groups that are hostile. It also shows the rise of the rock band Fire Bomber, whose members include the mysterious lead singer Basara Nekki, Mylene Flare Jenius, the seventh daughter of Maximilian Jenius and Milia Fallyna Jenius, Ray Lovelock, and the full-blooded Zentradi Veffidas Feaze.

The Macross 7, the fleet's flagship, is made up of two parts: Battle 7 and City 7. Combat 7 is the ship's front portion. It is a completely transformable warship capable of separating from City 7 during combat. Maximilian Jenius, an original series cast member who also serves as fleet commander, is in charge of Battle 7. City 7, the considerably bigger back segment of the two-part ship, is the major civil population center of the armada, with a population of over one million people. Milia Fallyna Jenius, Maximilian Jenius' ex-wife, is the mayor of City 7. City 7 has a "shell" that may collapse to protect the civilian population during combat.

Basara Nekki is the primary character of Macross 7 and its spinoffs. He pilots a crimson VF-19 Excalibur Custom called the "Fire Valkyrie," with a unique guitar control strategy and audio transmitting system. He is the frontman and guitarist for the renowned rock band Fire Bomber, and he would later join the music-based combat squad Sound Force.

He is notable for his quick temper and knack for speaking exactly what he feels, which is usually not flattering. This guy is a very strong pacifist who strongly believes that music and passion are more important than physical strength. He doesn't care about anything but his songs and doesn't seem to notice what's going on around him, especially how women feel about him. He also has a bit of an ego and feels he is always correct.

But underneath the caustic exterior is a man who genuinely cares for the people close to him and has deep affections for the human soul. Basara's vision, on the other hand, is not limited to people. His main goal is to help everyone in the universe understand the power of music. His biggest conviction is that music has greater power than conflict.

Macross 7's basic plot is about this rock musician, Basara, seeking to make his place in the galaxy through his singing. It seems like standard material, but the program incorporates so many bizarre aspects that it makes you wonder if the creators were high. Macross 7 has been described as "rock singers flying around in transforming robot-jets, all while battling space vampires with the force of music," and I think this description is fairly accurate.

So if you have problems swallowing that, this series is probably not for you. Most of the Macross franchise puts a lot of emphasis on taking things to the extreme, and Macross 7 not only revels in it but thrives on its strangeness, which is what makes it so enjoyable. Accepting the foolishness and going with the flow are the keys to appreciating it.

This show works because its main characters have complicated relationships with each other and with the rest of their friends and family. Basara and his band each have their own pasts, not to mention the backstories of certain individuals who teamed up with them. Macross 7 looked really gorgeous back in the day and may appear antiquated now, and the fact that there are over 50 (it's 49, but who likes odd numbers?) episodes with a lot of space warfare means that some animation will be repeated. This will not interfere with your experience, though!

When you mix fantastic images, great sound, and some awesome characters in a well-paced narrative, you get one wild trip. This Macross series is far superior compared to the original, in my opinion. Perhaps this has more to do with interest, but you’re in for a treat if you appreciate the music and don't mind repetitive space war animation. Macross 7 is most renowned for its music, and the fictitious band Fire Bomber, which stars in the anime, has issued over a dozen albums since the show first aired.

So, do I suggest this series to you at the end? Yes and no. Sure, if you have the patience to sit through a slow-starting series with some unforgettable moments, by all means, go for it. But if you’re looking for an excellent Macross-based mecha animation, you’re better off watching something else from this franchise. But hey, Macross 7 may still surprise you, so it’s recommended that you give it a spin!
