Chobits Review

Chobits is a reasonably old anime, released back in 2002 that showcased a very realistic incorporation of Artificial Intelligence in a normal society. The concept of “Human-Shaped” computers, also known as Persecoms, is a weird one for us. This anime covers a sheer amount of different topics. The concept of the relationships between Humans and Artificially Intelligent robots is what piques our interest the most.  So, let’s get right into our review for the anime Chobits without further ado!

The story of the anime Chobits revolves around a country bumpkin named Hideki Motosuwa who wishes to get into a college and works hard for it. He moves to the city and finds it very hard to make ends meet as he comes from a low-income family. Hideki gets fascinated when he comes across the Artificially Intelligent Robots named Persecoms and gets all excited. However, his excitement soon vanishes when he looks at the price tag for a Persecom.

One evening, he comes across an abandoned Persecom that looks and FEELS defected as well. The Persecoms are supposed to help you out with your everyday chores, and Hideki thinks it’s very convenient to own one. However, our MC gets all greedy and takes her home. After awkwardly analyzing her, Hidekoi’s able to activate her. She acts weird and can only say one word, “Chii '' which eventually becomes her name.

The rest of the story revolves around our MC uncovering the mystery behind “Chii’’, speculating that she might be a “Chobit’’, a robot possessing human emotions. Chii cannot download information into her hard drive as she’s defective. So, Hideki decides to teach her how to do it from scratch while also studying for his college entrance exam.

The overall story of the anime is pretty interesting as it makes us think about the possible relationships between a robot and a human. We can say that “Forbidden Love” between a robot and a human could be the central focus of this anime.

The plot includes a number of genres, including sci-fi, mystery, and romance. However, it’s pretty clear that the anime is steering the story away, making it more towards the slice of life/comedy genre. It makes the show hard to explain to others when there is so much going on on the side. Also, there are several filler episodes that we find annoying.

However, overall, the story gives us a good laugh and also makes us keep some tissue papers with us because of some of the emotional scenes. We’re giving you a heads up here because you might find yourself laughing and crying at the same time.

All the characters in Chobits leave their marks somewhere in your memory and play a vital role with whatever authority they’re given. We love how adorable and docile Chii is, even though she has the mental capacity of a 2-year old. We initially thought that she might get mature and more intelligent with time. However, to our surprise, there were not many changes in her personality, so we’re somewhat disappointed with that.

Hideki has his brain piece defected like Chii but in a slightly different way.

We love how kind and considerate he is with others and especially with Chii. We commend him for showing so much patience while teaching Chii that we doubt any other person could have the capacity to do so.

The other supporting characters played their parts very well and contributed a lot to the story’s progression. They feel significant and are likable as well. So, overall, the characters are not so interesting (except Chii, of course) and not so flat either.

The animation feels very simple and fresh, not your cookie-cutter sci-fi animation design and colors. The colors are also very soft and pastel-y, making us wonder if it is a sci-fi anime with robots?!

Also, the animation goes well with the story. There are not a lot of complexities with the designs, and it feels delightful to the eyes. Overall, the animation does not seem jarring to the eyes and can quickly get you hooked to it.

The opening song of Chobits gets us hooked because it’s incredibly catchy. You’re going to catch yourselfumming it randomly throughout your day (That’s what happened with us, at least). The background music and the ending sound are not very memorable compared to the main theme song, but it’s overall very decent.

The voice actors did a great job. Chii's voice was suitable to her character and her mental capacity as well.

Chobits is a pretty nice anime if you’re looking for something short and lighthearted to watch. The first half of the anime is gratifying with its fluffy and light story. However, the last few episodes are where the tone abruptly shifts, and they let us know what is actually happening in the show. The anime could’ve been perfect if the creators sprinkled some profound moments all over the first half instead of just dumping them in the last few episodes. It’s not that horrible, to be honest.

Overall, we enjoyed watching this anime, and the presence of Chii made it all the more interesting (sometimes annoying); if you’re into some light and fluffy comedy with a few sad moments, we recommend you to watch Chobits.

After reading this article, I have to question is this wasn’t written by an AI. The ‘review’ you provide is pretty generic and is overall flat and shallow. Adding a giant picture after every paragraph doesn’t make this any more compelling either. Frankly it only adds to the tedium of reading this.

I don’t really care as this comment won’t get approved anyways, but whoever read this, surely will notice.
