Kyoto Animation’s remake of Key’s classic visual novel blends romance, drama, and gentle supernatural mystery across tragic heroine arcs. This review covers the winter atmosphere, gorgeous falling snow, VN-style pacing flaws, character bubbles, and why the tears still come. Flawed, heartfelt, and essential for Key fans.
Overall, Noir could’ve been a great anime. The biggest thing holding it back was that the plot took too long to be revealed appropriately, making only the second half enjoyable. Other minor weaknesses included some time-wasting techniques as well as constant and pointless flashbacks.

The series progresses in two-episode mini-arcs up until the satisfying finale. The episodic feel just goes away after some time as they all neatly come together towards the end. This anime is highly recommended, but be warned that it is pretty dark, detailed, and complicated, so prepare to work your brain cells! Overall, DTB is extremely interesting and entertaining, especially for fans of the genre.
