There are many people in our world clamoring for equality, so there are many systems that appear to honor such values on the outside, but in reality they’re mere checkbox exercises and nothing more. You may already be part of multiple systems that maintain a solid facade of equality, but the truth only becomes apparent once you’re knee-deep in them and have few options left. There will always be those who defy such systems and bring about meaningful change, but how many of us are willing to be that person? Are we just waiting for a messiah who may never come? If so, will these systems ever truly change, and will these problems ever actually be solved?

The story is set in a mystical world where a select few, known as “witches,” can wield breathtaking magic. Protagonist Coco, however, is not lucky enough to be born one and comes from a humble background, often dreaming of using magic herself. The secrets behind casting magic are strictly guarded from non-witches, but everything changes when she fatefully catches a glimpse of the witch Qifrey casting a spell! This revelation of the truth behind magic drastically changes the course of her life, as she had already been set up to make waves in the magic world by dark forces as an unassuming toddler. Out of curiosity, Coco attempts to cast an unknown spell unsupervised, paying a gut-wrenching price as the dangerous spell brings tragedy upon her mother. Feeling partly responsible, Qifrey takes Coco under his wing, acknowledging her resolve to save her mother and possibly lead him to the forbidden-magic heretics he’s been searching for. Secrets of this magnitude are a heavy burden, and living in a magic society that sees Coco as an unwelcome “outside” makes mastering magic more difficult than it needs to be. Regardless, she is ready to give it her all to prove her passion and worth as a witch!

At the moment of writing this review, I have only watched up until episode 10, as the series is still airing. As per the story, the best words to describe it are "captivating," "magical," and "beautiful." As Coco herself is an “outsider” with no prior knowledge of magic or the rules that govern it, the world-building is done through her as she learns the ins and outs as a passionate apprentice. Qifrey himself does a visually captivating job of explaining things to his students and even functions as a powerful wild card with a dark past, willing to do things that are usually forbidden. The pacing is just right, and no single moment feels wasted because we are always taught something important about the characters and the world, which drives the overarching plot, which isn’t as whimsical as it seems on the surface. All of these elements are enhanced by timeless themes of friendship, family, hard work, mystery, mystique, and the special bond between teachers and students. As for the fantasy element, they show how magic can serve as a powerful medium for overcoming otherwise impassable barriers and, most importantly, bringing happiness to everyone.

There are clear antagonists who wish to break the binds that keep the magical society functioning peacefully; factions who adhere to the rules far too strictly; characters who walk a fine line between the acceptable and taboos; kind souls only wishing to help others; naive students who don’t fully understand the system they are stuck within owing to the flowery exterior; and even normal folk who stare in awe at "magic." Initially, it feels like magic education is attainable to all with hard work, but slowly, we are shown how it is only available to an elite few of the population based on birth, and greater opportunities are given only to those branded as "talented" early on. It is slowly making me dislike the unfair system, no matter how pretty it is on the outside, and to root for the wild cards, ready to pursue their goals at any cost and do what they believe is right.

The character department is just as captivating as the story, with each character having a distinct personality and representing a crucial aspect of the world they live in. Coco is a wonderful protagonist overflowing with innocence, curiosity, determination, loyalty, kindness, and a passion for magic; she is everything good and pure in this world. She is well aware of her mistakes and shortcomings, always doing her best to be responsible and make amends, yet never losing her spark to forge ahead and reignite it in those around her. She is not talented by any means and is even ostracized within the magical society as an "outsider," yet her determination and creativity illuminate the path. Next up is Qifrey, the “Gojo-lookalike-sensei” who existed long before Gojo did, the teacher of the Atelier and Coco’s guardian who is disproportionately biased in her favor. He is powerful, charming, and smart, and even mildly manipulative to achieve his own goals, acting as a mentor to both his students and the audience.

Arklaum Agott is a lens into the neopolitical side of magic: a girl born into a prominent magical lineage deemed “not talented” as a child and cast out, now on a destructive path to prove her worth, rushing the process while losing herself. I was not her biggest fan at first, but the narrative gradually develops her, and I find myself rooting for her. Tetia and Richeh are the other two students at the Atelier; Tetia is literally sunshine and bubbles, constantly hyped up and talking, but not beyond despair or indirect finger-pointing when things look bleak. Richeh is aloof and laid-back, but he harbors resentment towards adults and the rules imposed on them by magical society. Tartah is a supporting character born with a disability that causes him to see the world in silver alone, holding him back from ever becoming a witch or even from becoming a magic item craftsman. He seems inattentive at first, but we learn that he is incredibly observant and diligent, and his fateful encounter with Coco pushes him not to give up on magic so easily. Last but not least is Olruggio, the “Watchful Eye” for Qifrey's atelier, a man who seems cold on the outside but possesses warm magic and a caring heart. It was so nice to see an adult man with a proper beard in anime, because it even hints at his maturity in contrast to Qifrey. The interactions between Coco and all these characters are absolutely wholesome and insightful, with each growing with every encounter and experience in real time.

The art and animation department is a masterclass in creative, gorgeous visuals with a picture-book theme. I have heard that this studio spent over 5 years carefully crafting this anime prior to release, and it shows! This is a perfect portrayal of the limitless creative capabilities of the human mind and the unparalleled results of limitless passion poured into their work. The color palette is generally soft and muted on purpose, really bringing out the setting in a more medieval world devoid of technology, and the line art is neat and purposeful. They don’t portray magic as overly grandiose, except in a handful of very specific situations, highlighting its practicality and foundations rather than a shallow aura farming. Powerful spells are more about the intent behind them, such as Qifrey’s unrelenting drive to protect his beloved students, and how even the simplest spells can yield big results if used creatively.

Regardless, the magic looks beautiful and full of soul! The character designs are simple, yet memorable and alluring; you can tell something about each character from their design, but the narrative shows us that they’re so much more. At first I wondered if the flowing coats of the witches were just for visual effect, but it’s later revealed that they’re that way so that witches can draw spells in the presence of normal folk undetected, which was a very neat detail. Backgrounds are gorgeous and suit the themes perfectly, and the animations never once falter, especially the fabric and hair dynamics! There’s just nothing more to say: the visuals are perfectly human and oozing life in every frame.

The Sounds and Music department is probably the least prominent, but it still does a supremely excellent job. The opening theme is "Kaze no Anthem featuring suis from Yorushika" by Eve, a violin piece with a medieval, magical vibe that perfectly captures the show's essence. It is accompanied by picture-book and picture-frame visuals of the characters and the world, each flowing smoothly and filling you with a sense of wonder. The ending themes are "Tada Utsukushii Noroi" by Nakamura Hak, "Yoru ni Ukabu" by Nakamura Hak, and "Hikari" by Nakamura Hak, which are nice pieces offering a slow departure. The OSTs suit each moment well, but none of them stuck with me in particular. The voice acting is spectacular; each voice actor embodies their character, perfectly capturing both the good and the bad without missing a beat. My top picks are Motomura Rena as Coco, oozing all the magical wonder and innocence the character represents, and Hanae Natsuki as Qifrey, portraying a gentle and proficient mentor who isn’t devoid of his own problems (this VA is unstoppable at this point). Fun fact: Nakamura Yuuichi, who voices Gojo Satoru, also voices Olruggio here!

Overall, “Witch Hat Atelier” is a rare gem of an anime, long in the making, finally released to the world. The time, hard work, and passion that this small studio poured into this project are as clear as day, celebrating the beauty and creativity of the human mind that no AI could ever hope to create from scratch. I found myself eagerly waiting for the next episode every week because they know how to end certain episodes with massive cliffhangers, and I always end up enjoying the continuation. It isn’t too heavy on the brain and is a fairly chill watch you can appreciate for what it is; there is no repetitive formula and no lack of new things to discover every time. I highly recommend this show to everyone and their grandmother; it deserves all the praise it’s getting and more!
