Mari Makinami 1/7 Figure + Evangelion Hits Criterion
Look. Evangelion is having another moment, and honestly, it never really left.
Figure maker Revolve put out this 1/7 scale Mari Makinami Illustrious [Last Mission] piece from Shin Evangelion Movie (Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time), and it is a clean one. White plugsuit, that signature twin-tail energy, glasses still on, hand on her hip like she owns the whole damn hangar. About 270mm tall, pre-painted PVC and ABS, special base included. Sculpt captures that Rebuild-era Mari vibe perfectly. She showed up in 2.0, stole scenes in 3.0+1.0, and somehow still feels like the franchise’s wild card. British pilot, Unit-08, zero filter. Love her or side-eye her, she sticks.

Now the bigger picture. On July 30, 2026, The Criterion Channel announced it is adding the complete Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, plus Evangelion: Death (True)² and The End of Evangelion, starting September 1, 2026. That is all 26 episodes, the 1998 recap film, and the 1997 theatrical gut-punch finale. GKIDS already ran the 30th Anniversary Movie Fest in North American theaters July 21 and 22. Death (True)² & Rebirth one night, then End of Eva the next. Now Criterion is putting the whole original run next to Kurosawa and Bergman like it always belonged there.
Hideaki Anno and Studio Gainax dropped this thing in 1995 and rewired what anime could even do. It’s a mecha show on the surface. But underneath, it’s trauma, isolation, depression, and the hedgehog’s dilemma. Japan was still shaking from the bubble collapse and the Tokyo subway attacks. Anno poured all of that into Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and the rest. The End of Evangelion in 1997 was not a victory lap. It was messy, furious, and desperate for connection. Then the Rebuild films came later and gave us Mari, a character who refuses to drown in the same way the original cast does.
So yeah. Criterion is streaming the classics in September. A sharp Mari figure is still circulating for people who want a piece of the Rebuild era on the shelf. Same franchise, different entry points, still hitting three decades later.
