Tokyo Ghoul

The UnHoly Father

It would be an understatement to say that Ken Kaneki is a tortured soul. He was intelligent yet soft-spoken, introverted, and in most regards timid in nature. He was the child of a sometimes abusive mother who lacked the resolve to push back against the forces draining her life. Kaneki saw his mother as a kind and gentle person despite the abuse. A woman who, after the death of his father, worked multiple jobs to support them. Her work ethic was never enough as in addition to providing for herself and Kaneki, she provided income to a non-disabled sister.

As “Mother is God in the eyes of a child,” a young Kaneki followed her teachings and lived under the law “it is better to feel pain yourself than to inflict it on others as long as you remain kind, you will find joy again.” This accepted belief and multiple doses of neglect and abandonment, from his father’s death, his mother’s long work hours, her subsequent untimely death, and living with the aunt who deceived his mother a young Kaneki should have broken under the weight of these circumstances. Instead, it produced a Masochist, a character who cast in hentai instead of anime would have been fodder for netorare.

Kaneki held on to hope, and “hope is a dangerous thing. Hope can drive a man insane.’ This quote from the movie Shawshank Redemption a movie with a protagonist similar to Kaneki is a precise mirror into Kaneki’s soul. Kaneki held out hope that someone or something would save him.

Titled Aogiri, the tenth episode of Tokyo Ghoul  Ken Kaneki is taken hostage from the Anteiku Coffee Shop. The Ghouls at Anteiku had become his new surrogate family after his Ghoul transformation. The Ghouls there provided him with acceptance, and It was a good place for him to heal. Unfortunately, he would not be allowed to heal long as life had other plans.

For every day, there is a night, and for every masochist, there is a sadist, though, in Kaneki’s case, there were multiple sadists, and when you are the popular guy, everyone wants a slice. Enter Yamori.

Suppose Yoshimura is the Holy Father. The wise, caring, nurturing patriarch of Anteiku who mentored and nursed Kaneki’s physical and physic wounds, Yamuri must be the Unholy Father, the breaker, and the destroyer.

Little is known about his background. He was one of the leaders of the White Suits. At some point, Yamuri is captured by the CCG and imprisoned. During his imprisonment, he is maliciously tortured by an interrogator of the CCG. At some point, he escapes confinement, and the afflicted subsequently becomes a torturer.

Sometime later, he begins to don the moniker “Jason,” referencing the 1982 slasher film Friday the 13th Part III. The original Friday the 13th was released in 1980; however, it is not until the third installment that Jason Vorhees, the character synonymous with the series, begins to wear a hockey mask. When Yamuri escapes the Cochlea Ghoul Detention Center, he at some points adds the hockey mask to his torture repertoire.

The Aogiri Arc of Tokyo Ghoul spans the last three episodes of Tokyo Ghoul. As the Aogiri enter the 20th Ward, they are tasked with finding Rize or the one who smells like Rize. When Yamuri finds Kaneki, their meeting is less than amicable. Yamuri, who now delights in excessive violence, brutally assaults the coffee shop deposing any resistance and taking Kaneki hostage.

Episode eleven (High Spirits) opens with the CCG in a struggle against Aogiri and the ghouls of Anteiku discussing plans to rescue Kaneki. The scene then shifts to Kaneki and Yamuri, who open with a more formal introduction. As he places the hockey mask upon his face Yamuri now Jason begins to torture Kaneki using many of the same methods he experienced during his confinement at Cochlea.

“The weak shall be trampled underfoot, tormented, violated,” were the words Jason imparted to Ken as he began breaking his mind.

Jason imposed a series of implements; he used RC supplements, a biochemical designed by the CCG to disable his ghoul abilities. Additionally, he acquired a new set of pliers; Rize stole the old set in episode one. He would use the new collection to cut off Kaneki’s limbs sadistically.

When the master was away, Haru and Shuu would tend to Kaneki. They would clean his wounds, encouraging him and planning for Kaneki’s escape. However, the Unholy Father would have other plans……..
