Shokugeki no Souma Season Two

“The Second Plate”

This season of Food Wars continues where it left off last season with a battle between those who were chosen to take part in the Autumn Elections. As his classmates are eliminated one by one, Yukihira gives it everything he's got to beat his opponents' talent and cunning and win the competition. Meanwhile, he explores new methods and discovers that he must let go of his old personality to become the most refined chef he can be, pushing himself to the limit.

While the story has several plot points, the main focus is on the Autumn Elections competition. As everyone keeps coming up with new imaginative recipes, each episode may be inspiring, but it becomes monotonous, especially compared to the first season. This is because the previously presented characters are constantly pitted against each other. Even so, you'll find yourself cheering for your favorite contestant (my personal fave was Akira Hayama, yay) and making educated guesses about who will be the next to be eliminated.

Although I binge-watched the entire series, I had the impression that the rhythm was off at times. While plot-wise, the last round's outcome was more than acceptable for structuring the next episodes and allowing the character to develop further, I disagree. In terms of plot development and character growth, the "Shino's Japan" section was invaluable. It introduced Yukihira to a whole new setting, provided new obstacles, and laid the groundwork for his character development.

The show's great sound and artwork quality (which I'm sure was pricey) is maintained. Everything appears to have been meticulously polished and crafted. However, my favorite part of this season was the imagery and excellent graphical output utilized to convey Hayama's scents and spices, especially the golden light that surrounded him whenever he was cooking.

To be fair, I thought the opening and closing songs were bland in comparison to those from the first season's soundtrack, but the original soundtracks were preserved for the show's most dramatic moments. And as usual, you just won’t be able to keep your head still as the sounds float into your ears.

There are several references to advanced internal culinary phrases and a considerable deal of food expertise involved in keeping with the show's history. Although I was sorry to admit it, the fish market episode made me realize how little I knew about purchasing seasonal fish (I was actually embarrassed). The olive oil-based lemon curd was a small stroke of genius on the writer's part.

However, in keeping with the character's hues, we were still able to witness Yukihira inventing things from low-cost materials, such as his molecular nori spheres, which were inspired by inexpensive Japanese confectionery. It was also interesting to learn about the history of chefs who immigrated to France in the last episode, even though I'm not sure how accurate it is in terms of historical accuracy.

Shokugeki no Souma (Food Wars!) Season Two Review

Overall, this was a fantastic continuation to the Season 1 of the Food Wars anime series! If you’ve already seen the first season, you’d best ensure you don’t miss the second! In terms of content, the season provided precisely what it promised. It had some interesting plot twists, as well as a little something extra, owing to the Stagiaire session at the very end.

As you’d have expected from all, you saw in Season One, its really competitive and tense; you would also gain a tremendous amount of knowledge on food, and it’s even impressive that the outcome of the Autumn Elections was pretty rational, though it seemed a bit off when the judges disagreed with some of them not giving Soma higher marks.

But this Season Two was a tad bit more repetitive in the story than the previous season, but that won’t deter me from finishing this. I need to see what’s going to happen in the next season.

And yeah, Soma, you’ve really done a great job so far, and I think it’s pretty okay to say I expect more from you next season.

Arigato!!!
