Re:Creators
Isekai anime took the Anime community by storm when it first appeared, and to this day, there are so many Isekai titles being released each season. In a time where Isekai anime was so predominant, a certain “Reverse Isekai'' anime dared to tread the same territory. To many fans, who were tired of the ever-repetitive tropes of typical Isekai anime, such a Reverse Isekai would ideally be a godsend. Add the additional genres of Action, Sci-Fi, and Mecha to it, and the potential for a great series is born.
Re:CREATORS is a Reverse Isekai TV anime series that ran for and concluded within 22 episodes. It began airing on the 8th of April and went up until the 16th of September as a Spring 2017 title. The series was produced by Aniplex, Magic Capsule, Shogakukan, and ABC Animation and brought to life by Studio TROYCA.
The primary staff at the helm included Aoki Ei (Director, Episode Director, Script, Storyboard and Series Composition), Arai Kazuto (Episode Director and Storyboard), Aketagawa Jin (Sound Director), and Kuriyama Takayuki (Episode Director). This Reverse Isekai anime sported the genres of Action, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Mecha as well. It was Rated R - 17+ for its violence and profanity, being most suited for mature audiences.
Re:CREATORS is an Original series based on the manga of the same title. The Manga ran for six volumes, from the 19th of April 2017 to the 19th of November 2019. It was by Author Hiroe Rei and Artist Katou Daiki, serialized in Sunday Gene-X. A spin-off Manga titled “Re:Creators: One More!” was also released as a single volume, featuring the genres of Comedy, Fantasy, Romance, School and Shounen by Artist and Author Kumagai Yuuki in 2017.
In Isekai anime, a person or group of people from the real world gets transported to another world, typically a fantasy one, in one way or another. In Reverse Isekai, it's simply the other way around: Characters from fictional worlds get transported to the real human world.
How and why this displacement occurs is a common question in Isekai anime too. But in a Reverse situation, beings of supernatural abilities are put in a world where their capabilities defy the natural laws and balance. This is one of the central premises of Re:Creators, which makes it such a good series.
Different humans in the real world have woven countless different worlds in their heads and brought them to life via their work, each stemming from its creator’s endlessly unique imagination. Protagonist Souta Mizushino is a typical high school student, just like many of us anime fans, who aspires to one day become such a creator via writing and illustrating his very own light novel. He watches anime, reads manga and light novels, and plays games, searching for inspiration while practicing his illustrations.
On a typical day, while watching a particular anime, he gets briefly transported into the anime, right into the middle of a fierce fight scene between two characters: one a heroine from that anime and the other someone he had never seen before. He momentarily returns to the real world and soon realizes that the anime's headstrong heroine, Selesia Yupitilia, has somehow returned to the real world with him. Strangely enough, she doesn't appear in 2D or in anime format; instead, she looks like a perfect human representation of the character.
Soon, other fictional characters from different worlds start appearing in the real world, each carrying hopes and scars of their homeworld. The characters include a princess knight, a magical girl, and a ruthless brawler, with many more yet to reveal themselves in modern Japan.
The most peculiar character is a mysterious girl in full military regalia, who everyone refers to as the "Gunpuku no Himegimi.” No one knows who this particular character is, which series she is from and who created her. Despite this, she seems to know more than she should about the real world, calling it the “Creators’ world,” fully acknowledging that they are but characters written by people in this world.
Somehow caught up in the middle of all this, Souta is somehow connected to everything but has no clue about it initially. He works with Selesia and a calm and collected librarian NPC named Meteora Österreich to unravel the truth behind the strange events, together with their respective creators.
There are many powerful forces at play, all threatening to overthrow the balance of the natural world, and soon the once clear line between reality and imagination starts to blur with each natural law broken. The fateful meeting between creators and those they created is imminent, and the stakes are very high.
Re:Creators is very original, entertaining, and creative. The level at which this anime conveys its uniqueness and specialty is definitely commendable. This is evident even in the single recap episode. Be it a Mecha pilot or a magical girl; this series has characters that fit into almost all types of genres and anything in between. It's a given that at least one of these characters will appeal to every kind of viewer.
The story is built around the myriad of characters brought into the real world by some strange phenomenon. As they attempt to find the reasons behind it, find their Creators, pick their side and stay true to themselves and their homeworlds, they must also work together looking at the bigger picture. The way an ordinary high school student fits into the middle of all this, albeit awkward at first, is done very well, especially towards the end. The story is solid, has a nice pace and fluid flow until the very end.
The characters of Re:Creators are as diverse as they come and have been implemented really well too. Regardless of the viewer’s favorite type of anime, this series will likely have a character from it. All of them will be featured in the most natural way possible, and their interactions don’t feel out of place in the least.
As for Character Development, this series featured one of the best developments for a typical high schooler as he traverses a real-world thrown into chaos and ultimately shows just how much impact he can have while being an ordinary human. Even the other characters develop well via their new experiences, especially by meeting their respective Creators.
The Art and Animation of Re:Creators is not the greatest, but for a 2017 anime, it is good enough. Nothing is outstanding, but the production team is giving their all for this aspect is evident, especially after the recap episode. The character designs are diverse, unique, and fitting.
The Sounds and Music of Re:Creators are nothing short of epic. The Opening themes are "gravityWall" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie and "sh0ut" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie, both of which complement the anime so well and legendary in their own rights.
The Ending themes are "gravityWall" by SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Tielle & Gemie, "NEWLOOK" by Mashiro Ayano, "world Étude" by Aki Toyosaki, and "Rubikon" by Sangatsu no Phantasia. The Endings are more or less good too. Most of the OSTs are worthy contenders for the best anime OST of 2017, hats off to being perfect in this department.
Overall, Re:Creators is a delightful series. The music is outstanding, and the manner in which they perfectly fit so many types of characters into one anime is legendary. It is a worthy contender to be one of the best anime series out there.
This anime consistently sticks with its uniqueness, originality, and specialness. The ending is excellent as well, with nice twists and turns which catch viewers off guard. This series is highly recommended; even if you’re not too pleased with the start, keep watching as it will definitely get better, all in preparation until the ending just blows you away.
