Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear “A Cuddly Isekai Romp” After intensively playing VRMMO World Fantasy Online for a year, 15-year-old Yuna receives a bear costume from the game's administrator. While a bit awkward, the costume has overpowering stats and effects that strengthen her character significantly. After accepting the bear gear, she was transported to another world with no way to leave. Confused and unable to log out, this withdrawn, wealthy girl explores a new environment. She rescues a girl named Fina from wild wolves, and together they go to the city of Crimonia. However, with her eccentric bear outfit, Yuna stands out wherever she goes, and with her enhanced martial skills, her reputation quickly grows - to the point where people nickname her "Blood Bear." Accepting her new life, Yuna decides to take on the role of adventurer and thoroughly enjoy this new world. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is an anime adaptation of the light novel of the same name by the author Kumanano and illustrated by 029. The anime was released in the fall of 2020 and has 12 episodes. EMT Studio, which worked on this series, is known for stories such as Renai Boukun and Assassins Pride. In April 2023, this anime got a sequel called Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear Punch! Isekai is a controversial genre in itself. Since its popularization in 2012, when Sword Art Online was released, at least two anime of this genre have been released every season. Due to such mass production, there are a lot of bad and monotonous isekai out there, and it's getting harder and harder to find a good one. In recent years, authors have tried to add something new to this genre and make their stories more interesting. Of course, original doesn't mean good, so only a few succeeded in making at least decent stories. When it comes to Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear, small but significant changes have managed to make this anime different in a positive way. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is precisely what it seems. The simple premise describes the anime well; viewers know exactly what they're getting into. So, this series is the right choice for lovers of light and cute stories. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear doesn't try to complicate things unnecessarily and doesn't try to be something it's not. And in that simplicity lies the charm of this anime! By showing the feelings and the new life of the main character, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear manages to be relatable to gamers who are tired of isekai, whose point is to pass the game and return to reality. We all know that it is not easy to live in this world and that mere existence can be unbearable all too often. Therefore, many tend to escape from harsh reality and turn to the virtual world of anime and video games. So is the story's protagonist, Yuna, who is similar to today's 15-year-olds in many ways. She likes the fictional world much more than reality and tries to enjoy it to the maximum. Upon arrival, she rescued a girl, Fina, who then led her to the town where the Adventures Guild is located. Here, Yuna becomes an adventurer and sets out on her quests. But there is one catch. The World Fantasy Online game is the most generic game you can find. Like all games of this type, this one has a colorful setting with different creatures, NPCs, characters, and outfits like Yuna's bear costume. In addition, this game does not have a specific story or ultimate task that Yuna must complete. Because of her simplicity and relaxed character, Yuna chose World Fantasy Online, and now she is casually doing her missions. Her tasks include fighting roaming monsters in the wild, discovering treasures, collecting various objects, and everything else you can find in an MMORPG game. What makes the story even more interesting is that Yuna is, without question, the strongest character in this world. Now, overpowered main characters are not uncommon in this genre. However, unlike many, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear treats Yuna's power in the right way, so you don't feel like you're watching nonsense. Yuna is a long-time gamer who knows all the tricks of the game. In addition, she came into this world with a bear costume that is not just there for decoration. Besides making her look cute, this costume gives Yuna powers that make her nearly invincible. Using her strength and combat skills, fighting monsters is more of a chore than a task. Another thing that connects Yuna with teenagers is her laziness and attitude, which are classic for fifteen-year-olds who need to find their place in the world. She, like many, believes that the real world is terrible, so she indulges in the world of video games. She also looks pretty carefree but also lonely. But on top of all that, Yuna is not an apathetic and cold person. One mistake many isekai make that Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear corrects is that the protagonists are cold people. The writers probably do this to show some emotional development; however, it just makes the characters look edgy. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear doesn't have this problem because Yuna, despite her anti-social exterior, is very empathetic. She is a teenager with an attitude, but she also has a heart of gold and a strong sense of justice. She will always help someone in need, which makes her even more relatable. Isekai authors forget that teenagers are not edge lords and ignore their good qualities. This series does not do that, and this small change raises it to a higher level in terms of quality. Her relationships with other characters also came to the fore. Fina and Noire are just some of the characters she connected with. These relationships are not particularly complex, but they are beautifully portrayed and give insight into Yuna's feelings toward people and her behavior in the relationships that matter to her. When it came to the other characters, Fina stood out the most. Yuna rescued this young girl; in all honesty, it is the most fortunate development that could have occurred for her. In addition to keeping her from the monster, Yuna also helped her mother recover from her illness. What stands out about this character is her maturity. Although she is only ten, Fina knows how to care for her family, which is admirable. She also influenced Yuna, helping her change how she viewed the people she cared about. The anime's most significant problem would be the pacing of the story. Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear has adapted about 15 volumes in only 12 episodes. Because of this, the story sometimes seems rushed, but this is a small problem. The anime is still watchable, and the story flows nicely. Each episode brings something new and reveals parts of this world, which is why you will never be bored. When it comes to the technical aspects of the story, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is once again a simple but beautiful anime. The art style is adorable and fits nicely with the show's aesthetics. The animation is solid and smooth. It cannot be said that it is impressive or at the level of what we see in modern battle shounen, but it is still quite okay and meets the needs of the anime. The action scenes look good, and the series is generally pleasing to the eye. The opening, "Itsuka no Kioku," sung by Fina's voice actor, Azumi Waki, contributes to the general impression of the series in its own way. This song shows a part of Fina and Yuna's relationship, making the anime even more adorable. The song "Ano no," sung by Yuna's voice actor Maki Kawase, complements this. Overall, Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear is a cute anime about a girl who loves and enjoys her new life. It's a simple story to cheer you up and keep your attention. It may not be particularly complex, but everything it does, it does solidly. Overall, it's an excellent show for those who enjoy wholesome stories!
