I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too
“Isekai being Isekai”
Isekai and long titles that leave you short of breath—name a better duo, to be honest. While 2023 marked the return of Konosuba, with our favorite girl Megumin taking the helm and being the show's star this time, the isekai scene of 2023 was all armed and ready to introduce us to new realms, new worlds, and new personalities. You can't digest something like ‘Jobless Reincarnation: Season 2’ without having all these appetizers now, can you?
With the fan-favorite ‘Masamune-kun’s no Revenge’ making the grand return to the stage this summer, ‘I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too’ made sure it didn’t get left behind. It showed us just how the ‘zero to hero’ story works in the Isekai world. That also, in a way that we aren't indeed strangers to. Many people wrote it off as another generic isekai since we've been getting many of those lately for no reason whatsoever.
But after being done with the show, I can assure you that the title has its charms, despite the show trying its hardest to make us drop it along the way more than just a couple of times. That said, let’s dive into what this new Isekai title is all about!
The light at the end of the tunnel
If you think Satou Kazuma had the worst start as far as an anime, let alone an Isekai protagonist, is concerned, brace yourselves, for you're about to witness a heartbreaking story. For as long as he can remember, Yuuya Tenjou has always been the target of everything terrible this world has to offer.
The sole reason for that is the fact that he's obese and ugly, making everyone around him, his parents included, view him as the meteor that struck the face of planet Earth, consuming all the resources that it had to offer.
Reduced to nothing but a giant ball of despair and misery, Yuuya Tenjou has gotten used to this role and this life that the universe has bestowed upon him. But even with the whole world against him, not letting go of any chance to belittle him in any way possible, his grandfather is always there to ensure he has a warm embrace that makes him forget all of his problems, even if it’s just for a mere fleeting moment.
However, when his grandfather dies and he's left to the mercy of the cruel world that hasn't once treated him like a human being, it's like he has his life sucked out of him—that day indeed marked the demise of both the grandfather and the grandchild.
Life's hard after Grandpa's departure. But one day, while cleaning his grandfather's place, he comes in front of a strange sight. Upon a push, he's transported into a different location—a new world that he hasn't seen before. At a loss for words, he's trying to make heads and tails out of the situation. Seeing all these game-like straits, levels, and abilities come to life, Yuuya Tenjou has finally found something more significant than the mortal world has to offer!
‘The Redemption Arc’
Yuuya Tenjou trains his hardest in this new world, transforming himself into the most immense Chad-like character we've seen in a long time. And since he can bring things from the isekai world back to the real one, you can rest assured that his adipose tissue will not spring into action the second he steps through the door into the real world. This show really pushes the whole "It is all about looks, bro" thing to the extreme.
This metamorphosis has elevated Yuuya Tenjou to the planet's most desirable human specimen. Men are either trying to make him their best friend or are simply taking a beating from the best of both worlds, as he is the object of both sexes' undying affection. Something else, however, was the source of my annoyance. It was the fact that, after a while, both the battles and the "Yuuya in the knight suit" became boring, detracting from the excitement that these isekai battles and abilities have generated.
It's also at times that you feel like you're watching this weird fan blend between ‘Haven't you heard, I'm Sakamoto’ and a new isekai where the author's just trying to find his ‘imaginary self’ in the character, someone he always wanted to be this entire time. He's genuinely nice and doesn't get back at the people who wronged him this whole time. It makes me angry to no end since revenge solves everything, doesn’t it?
After all, I am ranting about a 2D character on the internet, and what makes the character interesting is his friendly attitude. Yuuya is on a mission to max out his straits, making these trips between worlds while living two completely different lives. I cannot imagine how the world would react if they found out it was the Yuuya; we all bullied our entire lives. The show's highlight, in my opinion, is Night, who represents the pinnacle of the isekai genre.
Fantastic animation, new waifu additions
I am not exaggerating when I say that the animation is superb. Since the CGI Goblin Slayer left us all traumatized, I treat claims of good animation in Isekai with a healthy dose of skepticism. But believe me when I say that the characters are brilliantly realized and that the glow-up/transformation is enough to make all the other girls want to hang him up in their rooms. Or bathrooms, whatever you prefer.
Now, the Waifu characters are the best part of the show. The anime always has hot female characters to feature, with a new one appearing every other episode. Girls are crazier than boys in this series, so you will not need to blink an eye when watching the anime (which is heavy on fan service).
Even though many people would choose the nice girl in this scenario—especially considering how our protagonist is, the goody two shoes the world has been waiting for—I have to say that Kazama Kaede is my favorite. Every other character has hair that is shinier than our futures combined, but we don’t talk about that.
Another noteworthy aspect of the show is its excellent opening theme. You simply cannot avoid it. Tsukuyomi has done a fantastic job, and they deserve praise. I’ve heard many people just picked up the anime for that alone. But you stayed for the story and remained for the art, didn’t you?
It’s safe to say that even if you’re an Isekai fan or not, ‘I Got a Cheat Skill in Another World and Became Unrivaled in The Real World, Too’ isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. It’s rough around the edges and repeatedly goes down the same road. But the earlier episodes do a great job drawing you all in, making every one of your friends pick up the show only for them to show up at your house with something rather horrifying soon after.
The anime tries hard to portray Yuuya Tenjou as this god, this nice guy who wouldn’t do anything wrong no matter what, and with every other character thirsting all over him, his stunts only manage to add a lot more to the infinite charm that he always carries like its nothing. If you’re a ‘Masamune-kun no Revenge’ fan and want to commemorate the show's return after all these years by watching something similar with that ‘isekai twist,’ I’d highly recommend this show.
It’s trashy yet has charms that make you sit through the entirety of the runtime. But I can see why someone would watch the show only to come up with a Twitter rant about how a million things are wrong with the show. But isn’t it the same with each one of us here?
Personally, I’d give it a 6.7/10. Don’t ask me why I slipped in that 0.2. I’m a harsh critic, and much analysis goes into ranking all these different shows. Or I just don’t know what I’m talking about; it can be one of the two. The show also reminded me of ‘Kiss Him, Not Me,’ a classic that just got lost in the heap of rom-com titles that all these different seasonal lineups have come up with. So, there you go! You can give the show a try to see if you like it or not! Till next time, take care and goodbye!
