SSSS.Dynazenon
The mecha niche has always been quite unpopular amongst the masses, but its fans know very well what they’re getting into and enjoy it reasonably well. SSSS.Dynazenon is a pretty new anime that gained mediocre popularity because fans started comparing it with SSSS.Gridman. SSSS.Dynazenon is the quasi-sequel of SSSS.Gridman, however, the former is trying to be the latter. Even though Trigger Studio made both the anime, they both have different elements and aspects that separate them from each other.
There are some similar elements, but that’s just the essence of the creator that is the same for both the anime. Having some similar aspects makes SSSS.Dynazenon retain the same success that made SSSS.Gridman successful. There are some impressive things about this anime that we liked; however, it is not entirely free from flaws. Let’s just get into more details about this anime and discuss the good and bad elements.
SSSS.Dynazenon follows the story of a high school boy named Yomogi Asanaka who happens to meet a man named Gauma under a bridge. The man told Yomogi that he’s a “Kaiju User” and it’s his responsibility to eliminate “Kaiji” (Monsters) that are lurking in the city. His claim is backed up by Gauma summoning a giant robot, Dynazenon, when the city is under attack by a kaiju.
Now, the Dynazenon requires the assistance of four people. So, Gauma, Yomogi, Yomogi’s classmate Minami, and a random man named Koyomi Yamanaki end up in the cockpit of the Dynazenon. Their first fight with the Kaiju using the Dynazenon marked the start of an adventure. They must find out the real cause behind the recurring attacks of Kaijus that prove to be very lethal to their city.
We get some old-school vibes from the anime. Other than that, the story is quite engaging but straightforward. It feels very self-contained, considering it’s a sequel. But it’s not really “absolutely” necessary to watch SSSS.Gridman before getting into SSSS.Dynazenon. However, if you want to season your experience further, then go for it.
We were expecting this anime to be quite noisy because obviously, we’re dealing with monsters and a giant robot here. However, when there are no monsters around, the anime is quite relaxing in itself.
The story might seem to progress slowly initially; however, that statement does not weigh much as every episode will keep you waiting for how things will develop. Comparing it to SSSS.Gridman, SSSS.Dynazenon might even be better than its predecessor in terms of plot development.
The story also feels very lighthearted in some instances, unlike Gridman. It sometimes even feels ridiculous because our characters are not taking the circumstances severe and are just fooling around. Sometimes that’s needed to break the monotony of the story, and it’s not a bad thing at all.
Overall, the story of SSSS.Dynazenon is an interesting one with a decent amount of action and perfect deliverance of what it wants to deliver. We like the compelling story of this anime.
The characters in this anime are distinct from each other and not just copy-pasted from its predecessor, Gridman. They have very thoughtfully created backstories that shape up their personality and make them who they are. Their personalities do not feel forced, and they feel authentic, despite being just anime characters.
You might feel confused when you look at the poster of this anime at first because Gauma looks more like the main character; however, it’s not the case here. Gauma is that pure energetic boy who’s into fictional stories. He’s that ultimate plot device that makes us connect the mystery of the plot that is not before our eyes. He’s also the most interesting out of all the characters in his personality and the knowledge he possesses.
Yomogi is our MC who’s purely righteous. He possesses some heroic qualities but wavers now and then. But still, Yomogi manages to always save the day because of his steadfast resolve. His character has a certain depth to it that kept him from being the generic protagonist.
Koyomi is a very relatable character. He’s that old neet guy who doesn’t have a job and is socially awkward. But despite being a failure with everything else. Koyomi is an essential part of the team, and they can’t beat kaijus without him.
Chise is that happy-go-lucky girl with a tragic background. She’s not directly involved in fighting the kaiju, but we often see the fight from her perspective. Without the team’s connection, the Dynazenon is nothing but a mere toy.
The animation for this anime shows a lot of effort put in, and we commend the animators for that. The colors are vibrant, the character designs are clean, and the background is very detailed. We loved how they animated the fight scenes, as their moves were perfectly coordinated. The artwork is better than its predecessor, SSSS.Gridman!
The creators made the fight scenes quite pumping with the background music, enriching our experience even more. The “transformation” theme is very catchy, and it hypes us up. The opening soundtrack is also very pleasing and appealing. So, overall, they did well in the sound department.
Studio Trigger proved to be one of the best producers in terms of producing mecha anime. They succeeded in delivering a concept similar to SSSS.Gridman without copy-pasting anything which gives the anime its originality. Overall, the anime is delightful and not boring at all. It will keep you at the edge of your seats and will keep you coming back for more. You should check out this anime if you loved SSSS.Gridman!
