Plastic Memories
Plastic Memories is another anime about human/technology integration, and it managed to take the anime community by storm when it first came out. It perfectly balances the elements of romance, comedy, and tragedy and avoids being overly cheesy as well as overly dramatic. It will take you on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and make you laugh lightheartedly as well at some moments. Though it looks generic and very basic, there is a lot more to how it seems. So, let’s get right into our detailed review of Plastic Memories!
Plastic Memories sets in the near future where humans and robots (Gifteas) live side by side in harmony. The robots look exactly like humans and possess emotions as well. However, the Gifteas have a lifespan of about 81,920 hours. After reaching their expiration date, the Gifteas start losing their memories and become hostile. That is why they must be exterminated as they reach their expiration date.
The story revolves around Tsukasa Mizukagi, who, after failing his college entrance exam, SOMEHOW, lands a job at the SAI Corporation. The corporation is responsible for creating Gifteas. Tsukasa’s job is to recover the Gifteas that are nearing their expiration date. He starts working with a Giftia named Isla, who does nothing but serve tea at the terminal. Tsukasa starts growing close to Isla more and more when he knows that her expiration date is nearing.
Now, Tsukasa must set his feelings aside and do. The story leans more towards the rom-com theme than the sci-fi theme. However, it does offer a little bit of everything. It makes you tear up, and then suddenly, you find yourself laughing as well. It creates the perfect balance between happy and sad moments.
Plastic Memories make you wonder if there is something more to the story. It makes you form theories because it keeps giving hints, making us think about what the anime is trying to portray. The story does not feel rushed at all and also successfully delivers what it wants to offer. The confessions in this anime are what make it different from every other rom-com anime. They do not feel out of place but are beautifully conveyed instead. It feels like we really wanted to hear them say what they were saying.
The story is also torturously sad and very character-driven. There’s no way you will stay composed while watching this anime because it’s highly emotional. Though we were expecting that kind of ending, it hurt a lot while watching the ending scenes.
Talking about the romance aspect of the story, it is not your average cookie-cutter love story. It deviates from the very generic setting of a basic love story and adds very gentle and unforced romance elements to it. So, we have to give it to Plastic Memories for not following the norms.
Overall, the story seems pretty unique, keeping us at the edge of our seats with every new episode. Keep some tissue papers with you while watching this anime because it sure as hell will make you cry.
The characters in Plastic Memories are both realistic as well as ridiculously dream-like. In some instances, we notice the characters acting like robots, even more so than Isla, the robot herself!
The characters like Michiri bring forth the harsh realities of his work and is quite a realistic character. Our MC is no different than any other protagonist surrounded by his own Harem of gorgeous girls.
The character we find the best in this whole series is Isla, the robot. She creates a perfect balance between possessing both the traits of a robot and a human. It’s a tricky balance to strike, but our writer did a great job with her character. The relationship between the two main characters is also fascinating and beautifully portrayed. You will find yourself shipping the two really hard.
The supporting characters are just as essential as the main characters. It feels like they're the main characters of their own story, but that story is just not the focus.
Overall, all the characters seem pretty interesting in one day or the other. They’re sure to make you like them and also get emotionally attached to them!
Plastic Memories is just like every other romance anime that does not have a high budget to produce high-quality animation when it comes to the animation style. This is why Shounen anime is far better animated than the romance one, and that’s a sad fact.
The animation is not that awful and has an immaculate and fresh feel to it. The color palette is very bright, and the overall feeling of the artwork is delightful. It’s not like those dark sci-fi animation styles with warm tones. And that’s how it does justice with the romance genre. They did a decent job with characters expressing their emotions and even with their movements. The characters look and feel human when they’re just anime characters.
The soundtrack and the background of Plastic Memories are enjoyable and give a very springy vibe. It gives you a feel as if you need to remember those whom you’re no longer with. This is how the sound of Plastic Memories plays with your subconscious. The sounds are also very gentle and calming, making you remember them again and again.
Plastic Memories is a short anime that makes you go heavy on the tears. The ending is very poetic and has a meaning to it. This anime is definitely like your average sci-fi/romance/tragedy anime and has a charming feel. We recommend watching this anime as it’s precise, meaningful, and beautifully crafted.
