Noucome
Watching Noucome was one of those decisions made during that limbo period when you're looking for something to watch after all the seasonal anime you've been following is over. You’re waiting for the next season's anime to be released. Based on that, I wasn't surprised by the small number of reviews on this anime. So here I bring my take on it. Without further ado, let's start with the review.
The story revolves around Amakusa, he is or was a completely normal boy, and even he was very popular in middle school. Still, everything changed after he started high school because a curse fell on him: THE ABSOLUTE CHOICES, a curse that, without warning and at any time, can be activated. This consists of giving him two options that he has to do yes or yes, otherwise he will suffer an unbearable migraine. Another detail about this curse is that the options are always ridiculous and make him do idiotic things.
For this reason, his popularity fell, and now he is considered one of the five idiots of the school, But all is not lost; he has two people wanting to help him. First, his teacher, who was also cursed in the past and with a lot of effort, managed to get rid of her curse, and the other is Chocolat, a girl sent by God to help Amakusa get rid of his curse.
But there is a problem, and that is that she has amnesia. In consequence, she became very childish, and the only thing she thinks now is eating. And so, the story develops in which our protagonist will have to do everything he can to lift his curse, always surrounded by completely crazy characters.
I think the premise didn't take advantage of its potential. Although being a harem and ecchi anime, you obviously know that it's going to take advantage of every chance for fanservice. But even so, I didn't like that at a certain point. No development didn’t fall into ridiculousness to get to those situations, and the fanservice became so exaggerated that it was more important than the story. The moments where they tried to engage the viewer didn't work.
Somehow it still managed to get me to finish watching it, thanks to its comedy alone. If there's something special about Noucome, it's all the hilarious things it pulls out of its sleeve, and even on rare occasions, it managed to surprise me. It is also true that there are times when the comedy is repetitive, and the gags are sometimes not very funny, as they are the same ones that have been used for ages in other series.
I think the first seven episodes did an excellent job of motivating the viewer to keep watching. But like many other series, it's the episodes that are supposed to close the anime that bring it down. We are talking that in only three episodes, we went from having two or three girls in love with the main character to having many of them. So he stops being a social outcast, and part of the essence of the series is lost.
On the other hand, they put in an unnecessary and ridiculous drama, so the comedy is reduced, and finally, the fanservice increases considerably with TWO episodes in a water park. Basically TWO "Beach episodes.”
Kanade Amakusa is the main character of this comedy, the victim of the curse of absolute choices, who is forced to choose, or he will suffer from an unbearable migraine. Our protagonist is rather flat and generic—the typical relatively nice guy who, for some strange reason, ends up surrounded by women. He is an average person, but the fact that these choices he is forced to make are so embarrassing and ridiculous makes people see him differently.
Chocolat is who we might consider the co-protagonist of the story. She is a girl sent by God to help Kanade accomplish the mission that will make his curse disappear, although she ends up being a more significant burden for the protagonist, as Chocolat is a clueless and hungry girl.
It starts with Chocolat, where we can say we have a range eccentric of characters in the harem of our protagonist, where there is undoubtedly a girl for every taste (the tsundere, the loli, the bimbo, etc.) At first glance, as I mentioned, all may seem stereotypes, and believe me, I was also convinced it would be that simple but entering more into the series, you realize that they have something more. There is not a single sane character in that harem, which ends up helping the comic situations a lot.
I don't think it's an aspect to highlight from the series. The designs are well done enough that each character is easily distinguishable from the other by their details. Also, each of the characters' outfits interestingly matches their respective archetypes very well.
On the other hand, the animation is pretty standard but adequate for the series, performing the absurd moments correctly. And to my surprise, the quality remains consistent throughout the series and OVAs.
Although the title translated would be something like "My mental decisions completely interfere with my school romantic comedy," Noucome shows us from its first minutes that it is one comedy more for what happens to the main character. It was original that the comedy was created mainly by the decisions that the protagonist has to take in a Galge, Eroge, or Visual Novel style.
A situation where making a decision changes the course of the story, or well, in this case, changes the protagonist’s reputation with each choice he makes, making him sink lower and lower in the eyes of his schoolmates.
Noucome is an anime that I would only recommend if you have nothing else to watch. The premise is interesting but don’t go into it with very high expectations just based on it. It will get a few laughs out of you, and to some extent, you may find yourself enjoying the series.
