Full Dive: This Ultimate Next-Gen Full Dive RPG Is Even Shittier than Real Life!
The concept of visiting RPG games in the world of anime is not a new one. Full Dive RPG is yet another anime that promotes the idea of games and lets you experience getting inside a video game and being able to play it first-hand. The game is, of course, an RPG game that lets you clear a lot of missions to go further. It lets you possess particular objects that you may need throughout your journey. It also involves the presence of a childhood friend that is the source of all the troubles.
One thing that’s different about this anime is that, like how we see in Overlord or Cautious Hero, it’s not an isekai. Our MC in this anime has to go through a lot of trouble completing all the missions. Our MC can go back to his world whenever he wants. However, he cannot leave if he’s still in the middle of a mission. So, that gives a fascinating edge to the story. There are certainly some weak points to the anime as well. Let’s delve deep into our review about the latest VRMMO-based anime, Full Dive RPG.
“Kiwame Quest” was a game that came out ten years ago when the gaming industry was developing quickly. It had a lot of potential to be one of the best VRMMO games ever. The game claimed to give its users an incredibly realistic experience. The NPC’s were very human-like, and the users could also feel everything while playing the game. It was scarily accurate. But before the game could be a huge hit, the popularity of VRMMOs generally started to fade away.
Shifting to the present, Hiroshi Yuuki is a high school student and our MC who immerses himself in playing video games due to an embarrassing accident in the past. One of his favorite RPG game’s latest versions was not available to him, which greatly annoyed him. He stumbled upon a mysterious-looking game shop and met Reona Kisaragi there, who convinced him to buy “Kiwame Quest” instead.
Hiroshi starts the game and is astonished at the realism it offers. He thought he would have fun playing the game, but to his surprise, it was even more stressful than his already stressful life. He wants to quit playing it but can’t since Reona keeps convincing him to play it with her. Now, Hiroshi must clear every mission in the game while avoiding misfortunes that are waiting for him.
First things first, the concept of an ultra-realistic game that could be left whenever the user wants was an interesting element in the story. The creators tried to give some comedy elements to the story but failed because it doesn’t feel even remotely funny. We don’t find anything funny about our MC getting tangled up in many troubles to the point that he pees his pants. It’s not funny because that was an actual accident that our MC went through in his real life.
The story lacks logic and fails to incorporate physics that was much needed in it. It seems stupid at a lot of points. The story lacks luster while having a lot of potential. We had high hopes for the story because it was created by the creator of Cautious Hero, which was pretty decent. The anime lacks a lot in the story department.
Now, onto the characters. We have a foolish MC who gets manipulated easily and cannot get over his trauma from the past, which was an embarrassing accident for him. There’s no charm in his personality, and he is not very likable. He ends up suffering inside the game when he could just quit it. But our girl Reona has him wrapped around her finger. There’s no character development. All we see is his suffering and getting himself into the worst troubles. He’s painfully generic.
Reona is that classic annoying girl with a nice body and pretty face, and that’s about it. There is no depth in her character, and she is very dumb, even dumber than our MC. She’s the one who gets the most screen time, mostly about her being so selfish and greedy.
Then we have Mizarisa, who is a sadistic dominatrix (that sounds so wrong) who loves torturing our MC. Her appearance does not suit her character well, and she gets repetitive most of the time.
Kaede is the tsundere little sister that is just there for fan service, but she’s not really there at all. She gets very little screen time that we even forget about her existence.
The childhood friend is pretty crazy and wants to hunt down our MC because he accidentally killed her brother. She’s a psychopath and is obsessed with killing the MC.
We’re done with the characters here, and we don’t find anyone interesting to dote on, as they're all really plain with no depth.
The animation is just okay, to be honest. Nothing is striking about it. They tried to design the characters interestingly, giving them colorful eyes and clothes to make up for the lack of visuals. There’s a visible blank look on the face of all the characters, which we find really disappointing. The animation definitely could’ve been better with all the potential it had. The colors, however, were pretty pleasing to the eyes, but that’s about it.
Voice actors for this anime are the only ones who did a good job. All the voices were suitable for our characters. The OSTs were also pretty good, so we definitely see some improvements in the sound department for this anime.
Full Dive RPG tried to become what it could not be. The only thing that we find interesting about this anime is the VRMMO game that is super-realistic. Other than that, the story lacks a lot. There are a lot of plot holes here and there. Overall, we did not really enjoy this anime, and it could not meet our expectations. However, if you’re a fan of anime like these, then do check it out.
