Concrete Revolutio
Anime featuring superhumans is nothing new. Every season, we get a good dose of anime like that. And most of them are pretty impressive with their storylines and even animation. We’ve noticed that there’s never a decrease in anime with superhero themes, and with the increase in its popularity in Western media, it’s not going down anytime soon.
Studio Bones is known for its high-quality anime with great storylines that rarely fail to impress the community. The anime produced by Studio Bones has set the bar high for other anime. Concrete Revolutio is one such anime made by Studio Bones, and we have high expectations for it. Let’s see if the anime comes up to our expectations or not!
The anime opens in the year Apotheosis 41, where Earth is filled with many supernatural beings, including magical girls, superhumans, ghosts, and robots. The official knowledge about these beings is not available to the locality and is secured by the Government.
Jirou Hitoyoshi is a guy who has been given the task of extracting information by secretly listening to a conversation between a scientist and a spy. However, Jirou gets busted, and it is revealed that the spy is an alien in disguise of a spy. Jirou receives the help of a waitress and a magical girl named Kikko Hoshino and gets away.
Jirou is a Super Population Research Laboratory member, so he is responsible for protecting superhumans and humanity against supernatural beings. He is greatly impressed by Kikko and asks her to join the agency he works in, to which Kikko agrees.
Five years have passed, and the balance between superhumans and normal humans has been disrupted. Both have started to distrust each other, and there is a war going on. Jirou ends up betraying his agency and is currently wanted. Those superhumans he once protected attack him. Will he be able to get through all of this safely?
There’s a difference between a badly written story and a messy story. We need to make this clear that the Concrete Revolutio is a messy one. It’s definitely not badly written since the premise feels promising. It’s just that the anime fails to present a coherent narrative that confuses many fans. Concrete Revolutio is the perfect example of a poorly organized plot.
We also have some problems with the pacing. Almost every episode starts with a completely different story. We’re shown different periods. The story just keeps bouncing back and forth. We’ve also noticed that the story is just too rushed.
When it comes to the story’s theme, it’s a great one. However, the theme is rubbed in your face too much. Every character talks too much about justice, and it feels very redundant at times.
Overall, the plot is quite messy. We’re disappointed because it was Studio Bones who created this anime. It had great potential if Studio Bones resolved the problem with pacing. Other than that, the story is very interesting and entertaining. It’s pretty unique from the other anime that we’ve watched before.
When it comes to the main characters, we see some problems. They’re not very interesting. They’re defined by what they can do and nothing more. Their personalities are determined by the kind of powers they use. They’re just there for the sake of the development of the plot.
Other than the main characters, this anime features a diverse and massive amount of superhumans and supernatural beings. They were not entirely memorable, but they did make things interesting and intriguing. Their presence gave a boost to the story and made us invest our time in it.
So, besides a few of the main characters that sometimes sound conflicting about their morals, we don’t have much to complain about in this department.
One thing that Studio Bones is perfect at is the visuals. With Concrete Revolutio, we’ve noticed very colorful and saturated artwork. The buildings, background, and characters match each other perfectly, and the visuals are very pleasing to the eyes.
The battle scenes are just amazing. They follow a symmetrical choreography and are very fluid. Some action scenes are pretty swift, and it's hard to keep up with them. We’ve found the transformation scenes very amusing when the characters’ physical form changes to something else.
The art inspiration is taken from Western-style Comic Book Panels, which contributes a lot to the uniqueness of the anime. If you’re a comic book fan, you’re definitely in for a treat.
The quality of animation is very consistent throughout the anime. There’s definitely a lot of effort put into the animation department, which we love! It’s one of the plus points for this anime and one of the best animations Studio Bones have created.
It’s imperative for an anime featuring superheroes to have a loud and exciting opening theme song. Concrete Revolutio provides us with a fascinating and blood-pumping opening theme song which goes really well with the overall vibe of the anime. We can’t help but listen to it again and again. You might end up never skipping it whenever you watch a new episode. The ending is also quite heavy on the guitar and is a rock song. We don’t have anything to complain about the opening and ending soundtrack as they’re literally the best!
The voice acting is also very impressive as it brings out the true feelings of the characters and sounds as if the actors are feeling the same emotions. The excitement, the sadness, the fun, everything is perfectly balanced.
Concrete Revolutio had the potential of being one of the best shounen anime of all time. If the pacing was not sub-par and the plot was consistent, it would’ve been a fantastic addition to the shonen genre. Studio Bones did great with the animation and character design, though. We recommend you watch this anime if you’re a fan of Comic Book Superheroes.
