Accelerator - A Certain Magical Index
A Certain Magical Index is a pretty big franchise with a lot of seasons and spin-offs. It has a number of unique and exciting characters, and one of them is Accelerator. Accelerator represents the science side of A Certain Magical Index and is the 1st ranked level 5 esper and is one of the strongest espers in the Academy City.
He was first introduced as an antagonist but later became the protagonist of the science side. We’ve also seen him as a primary antagonist in A Certain Scientific Railgun and a protagonist in A Certain Scientific Accelerator.
Accelerator seemed to have changed his fate after saving Last Order from Evil espers and becoming more heroic. So, let’s get started! Today, we’ll take a deeper look at the character of Accelerator, his personality, background, skills, and powers.
Personality
As Accelerator is super-strong, he tends to rely on his powers and brain and rarely trusts anyone else. Because of being chased down by many researchers who are after him because of his potential, he developed a maniacal and twisted personality. He’s pretty scary when he’s fighting with anyone, not afraid of killing and torturing. He appears to be quite sadistic because he enjoys seeing other people in agony.
Because he is highly competitive and wants to gain more recognition, he willingly joins the “Sisters Experiment,” where he saw he could get a better reputation and become more fearful. According to the sisters, Accelerator is unstoppable in a battle. He won’t show any mercy to his opponent and won’t even feel remorse for killing them. The only way to end a conflict with him is not to start one. That’s how dangerous he is.
His violent personality is mellowed down after he meets Last Order and decides to protect her. He also cares for Index in the same manner as he does for Last Order. But his way of showing care is also violent as once; he lectured a child brutally after the child was about to get himself killed.
Accelerator has the habit of not taking his opponents seriously and often lets his guard down. It works against many opponents, but it did not work against Touma, the main protagonist.
Overall, Accelerator is highly arrogant and has a nasty temper. He is only shown to care a little about Last Order and Index, so we can say that there is also a soft spot in his heart and a potential to become a good hero.
Background
We do not know much about Accelerator’s past, but he once mentioned that he had a regular name. However, he forgot the name, and it is yet to be revealed to us. When Accelerator took the “Power Curriculum Program,” he was sent to a special class. He spent most of his childhood there. He had trouble mingling with other kids his age as he always ended up hurting other kids because of his exceptional powers. When he turned ten, an unfortunate incident made the Academy City go against him, and that’s how he lost his trust in people.
Accelerator met Kihara Amata, one of the main antagonists, who trained him well to control his powers. Accelerator was incredibly impressed with Kihara and even adopted his personality. With such a profound ability and energy, Accelerator was made a part of an experiment where the researchers wanted to create a “Level 6 Esper”.
The experiment would only be successful if Accelerator kills “Misaka Mikoto,” the Railgun, 128 times. However, that was not possible, as the researchers could only create substandard clones of Misaka. The only way the experiment could succeed now was to make Accelerator kill the 20,000 clones of Misaka using different methods. He efficiently did the task, but the experiment was stopped later for some reason.
He originally wanted to participate in the experiment to gain a fearsome reputation so that no one could dare lay a finger on him. His personality became gradually became more and more twisted.
Relationships
Last Order
With Last Order, Accelerator shares a fatherly relationship. Last Order was the one who approached him first for protection. Although hesitant at first, Accelerator decided to protect Last Order. He didn’t have any romantic interest in Last Order and treated her more like his family. He revealed later that he always wanted to be with her as she would want to protect his family forever.
Misaka Worst
Misaka Worst is a specialized clone of Misaka that is different and stronger than all other clones. Accelerator needed Misaka Worst’s help to protect Last Order. She decided to help them and moved with them to the same apartment. According to Accelerator, Misaka Worst is a nuisance and is very annoying. Despite everything, Accelerator relies on Misaka Worst to protect Last Order.
Abilities and Powers
As Accelerator is a level 5 esper, he’s extremely strong. He’s named after his ability that makes him change the vector values of the things he touches after creating a field of AIM (Diffusion field) around him.
Accelerator can easily deflect bullets that come towards him using his abilities. He doesn’t even need conscious control for that. He can also reflect unnecessary ultraviolet light that could harm him. Accelerator is quite impressive with his defense but can also be beaten down if his defensive ability is negated.
Accelerator is seen to acquire black wings that let him speak the languages of angels. He is also shown to lose all control when he lets his wings out. He becomes highly overpowered in that state.
Final Verdict
Accelerator is one of the most well-sought and well-written characters in all of anime history. He’s most arguably everyone’s favorite character! The creators did a fantastic job giving a very complex personality to him, which suits him.
