World Trigger is officially on a one-month hiatus due to his ongoing health issues, which means no new chapter in the May 2 issue of Shueisha’s Jump SQ. The Man Behind Border

Ashihara is the sole architect of this universe. He writes it, he designs it, he draws it. The series originally launched in Weekly Shonen Jump back in 2013, but the weekly grind broke him down by November 2016, and after a brief return in late 2018, he made a permanent move to the monthly Jump SQ. in December 2018. Viz Media still handles the English license stateside, which means you’ve got no excuse not to catch up while he rests.

Why This Series Is Worth The Wait

For anyone late to the party, World Trigger is about Border agents defending Earth from interdimensional invaders called Neighbors using specialized energy weapons called Triggers. But that premise undersells what makes the series special. There’s no scream-to-power-up nonsense here. It’s squad tactics, resource management, rank ladders, and tournament arcs that read like a meticulously played Squad Leader campaign. The bureaucracy, the grind, the slow climb — for those of us who’ve spent decades navigating real-world systems, it hits different.

What’s Actually New This Time

Ashihara’s health has been a chronic hurdle for a decade now. He took breaks in January and February of 2025, another single-issue break this past January, and another in August 2025. The pattern is clear: he produces when he can, and rests when he must. The manga’s 29th volume shipped in Japan back on December 4, 2025, so there’s a fresh stack of material if you’ve fallen behind.

The Bigger Picture

In a market drowning in disposable isekai churned out at industrial speed, the survival of a creator-driven work like World Trigger says something about where fan culture has matured. We’ve learned to wait. We give Ashihara the same patient solidarity we’ve extended to Togashi for years now. The human being behind the ink matters more than a monthly quota.
