KILL LA KILL

Kill la Kill is that series that, without having any expectations about it, or knowing what it was about at all, managed to captivate me completely. I can even say that it is one of the anime series that I have enjoyed the most. Under an apparent lack of seriousness, a series keeps one of the most entertaining stories I have come across. So without further ado, let's start with the review.

This story takes place in the Honnouji Academy, where the students have uniforms that give them different powers and abilities. Student council president Satsuki Kiryūin enforces the rules by force. However, an exchange student named Ryuko Matoi stands in her way. Matoi, wielding a scissor-shaped sword and wearing a school uniform that is alive, will fight to find out who the murderer of her father is.

Kill la Kill's story is quite simple, a girl with a half-scissors sword is searching for her father's murderer. She arrives at a school where the student council president governs through a dictatorship where the richest have money and better uniforms with superpowers.

It might sound ridiculous, and maybe it is, but it is way more fun than it appears. More things happen, but that would be putting us in spoiler territory.

Although there was almost no story at first, something more than simple revenge began to take shape with the passage of the episodes. And although it never ceased to be a simple, typical, and predictable story, after its turning point, it managed to serve as a guide for what is truly important: the characters, the action, and all the random stuff that have made me laugh so much.

Unlike many other works where "showing meat" has the objective to attract a particular sector, the fanservice in Kill La Kill plays a vital role in the story. And this series would not be the same without it. Let's see, let's not kid ourselves. It is evident that, in part, they want to attract more public by showing meat. But by the style of the drawing and by how they deliver those situations, it shows that more than exciting, what they seek is to make us laugh and have some concordance with history.

Hiroyuki Imashi has a talent for writing memorable characters that contribute their grain of sand to the series's development. In that sense, he does not sin to have filler characters since each one is presented in a useful way to the plot. To not do this review of 10k words, I will only focus on the characters that I consider the main ones.

We have Ryuuko, the main character, a tough girl with a strong and aggressive personality. Her life was not easy. She became a shell to protect herself from it. But she shows to be sweet and kind to the people who matter to her and show her that they see beyond what she appears to be and gain her trust.

Throughout the series, she, along with her uniform, Senketsu, learns the value of friendships. And the confidence to believe in herself. Her character development might seem strange because she sometimes makes illogical decisions that make you question her character development's authenticity. But still, I became very fond of her.

The antagonist, Satsuki, is a serious girl with a tremendous sense of authority (No matter the angle, she will always see you as if you were an ant). My favorite character in the series. She shows the importance of loyalty and honor. She impresses with the determination that she has and all that she is willing to do to achieve her goals. I think she is the most developed character of all, and I will cut it here not to ruin anything.

Finally, Mako, who quickly becomes friends with Ryuuko, is a poor girl but with a big heart, which she continually proves. And although she frequently appears as a simple comic relief, she is a fundamental entity in Ryuko's life, which becomes key in the least expected moments.

One of its points that hooks you the most to the series is its art. Being one of my favorite anime as far as design is concerned. The characters may seem simple, but they overflow with personality, making them easily distinguishable from each other within the series characters.

The faces and expressions that the characters make are funny. The colors used throughout the series are great and give it great flair. The sets are pleasing to the eye, and, from time to time, the purposely made still frames appear at critical moments are incredible.

The budget for creating the anime was meager, being the first original series of the studio. Well, nobody starts with a lot of money in this business. This was clearly reflected in the animation as it glitched from excellent to mediocre. Trigger knew this very well but still tried to go beyond what was economically feasible. Giving us scenes that I just realized have cheap and low animation. But it was the studio's talent that these moments of the quality downturn were not noticeable, something challenging to handle.

The voice actors did more than a phenomenal job. It is easy to see that they put all their effort and had fun doing it, transmitting to whoever is listening.

The series OST is probably the point where everyone, lovers and haters, agrees. It's great. One of the best anime soundtracks to tell the truth.

The composer is the incredible Hiroyuki Sawano; if you don't know him well, to give you an idea, he has worked on Shingeki no Kyojin, Guilty Crown, Ao no Exorcist, among others. Some songs make use of voice, which is not very common to find in anime. Like Blumenkranz, Before My Body, Pieces are Dry, or I Want to Know Will Stay in My Memory Forever. All the songs fit the tone of the series very well. (Extra fact is that recently we can enjoy this full soundtrack on Spotify).

After Kill la Kill, I stayed as a Trigger fan and looking for more of the essence that that series emanated. Something simple, crazy, and that broke logic. And it is that making you forget what is logical is a talent that this anime has, and that turns watching it 100% something that you will enjoy. Fully recommended.
